Hi,

I am in my final year at Bournemouth University and doing a research project on why people watch television dramas and if mobile apps can enhance drama viewing.

I have developed a questionnaire which I would really appreciate it if you could take your time to complete so I can gain a better idea of why viewers watch television dramas and what they desire from companion applications.

Code:
You don't have permission to view the code content. Log in or register now.

Unfortunately so that I can get a sample which is representative of my target population I have had to restrict the age range to 18-34 (the largest users of mobile apps)

If you have any opinions on my research such as whether companion would enhance the viewing experience for dramas please post them below, I would be really interested to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!

An extremely arrogant, misguided and ageist approach imo.

You'll learn.

I do agree that it may have been a mistake to limit my audience, and I'm not in any way saying people out of this age range do not use technology. The reason for it is that you have to be able to justify a research sample which you can get enough representative data from and I have easier access to a large amount of people within this group. The sample needs to be representative of the target population so that I can make generalisations, if I was to do this on the wider population it would be much harder to gain enough data to make this possible.

I've already noted that if I were to begin the research again that I would have only restricted the population after I collected the results and establish which groups I had enough data for to make these generalisations.

Apologies if this has caused any offence.

I am sorry but joining a forum to gain extra brownie points for your University studies is not really a good idea. Perhaps if you got to know members on here a bit more then we could oblige. Until then enjoy the forum.

Hi Jenny288,

I think you might struggle a little on this forum locating that particular demographic... :Yikes:

That is seeming to be the case but I'm still interested in other peoples views and feedback on my research good or bad.

Hi again Jenny288,

...I'm still interested in other peoples views and feedback on my research good or bad.

OK... I've never watched any TV 'Soaps' and I've never owned a mobile phone... is this info of any use to you...?

Best Wishes,

Try do some physical research and not joing a forum solely to get the members to do your work.

I have been doing physical research as well and have had some very interesting discussion with people regarding my research which will be used in my overall findings.

you are probably better off posting this at digitalspy forums, there are a ton of soap watchers on there.

Thanks, I have done and got some good research. I just didn't want to restrict my posting to one forum.

Ps. I'm looking at all kinds of dramas not just soap

If my child came to me with a similar College project I would have sent her here, even though she would not have been a member before,

Looks like I may need to adjust my thinking about the kind of reception she would get,

I have seen more newbies post more crap on here over the years, just to get to the downloads, and nobody has said a word,in fact in some cases people have answered them,

As to your original question OP I am outside your demographic, sorry, but the best of luck with your course :)

But first you should have researched who your "target audience" are because the first part of your request is about "Why people watch Television Dramas" and therefore you should have discovered what "target audience" is the majority in watching TV dramas, because if your reseach is not about that majority it has no meaning or relevanceto the usage of apps to enhance the watching experience.

What some of them ^^^ said lol

I'd have to ask 'so what?' If you want to know why people watch TV drama you'd have to look at different genres surely? The age range you specified doesn't watch TV drama, they watch particular types of drama. Available demographic data already shows this.

For example, ITV have a new drama (Breathless) in answer to The Midwife (BBC). However, the audience profile skewed more towards the older viewer with 43% being over 65.

Surely the question is the problem? For example, people watch TV drama for different reasons so different genres will appeal to different age ranges. So I (male, 59), wouldn't be seen dead watching TV soaps, can tolerate some period dramas to keep the Mrs happy and found Last Tango in Halifax excellent. More plot twists than a politician being interviewed by Jeremy Paxman lol

None of which has anything to do with technology although I confess we downloaded the series to the iPad and watched on iPlayer with the iPad docked to the HD TV via an HDMI cable.

However, back to the original question, I think it might yield more interesting results if it was either "Why don't the 18-34 age group watch many television dramas?" since, in my experience, they don't. Or, perhaps, "How can mobile apps enhance the experience of TV drama viewers" except that your age range might then limit results to a minority.

Just my two-penneth :)

Thanks, I'm finding it really useful getting these different views and I will incorporate some of your ideas into my analysis stage.

In relation to the age groups and watching dramas within the questionnaire I have only asked for dramas viewers and also incorporated how often they watch different types of dramas so I can look into the different reasons.

Also I've separated it out into two main sections, one which looks into why people watch dramas and one which looks into why people would use companion applications while watching dramas to gain a better idea of exactly what people want from these experiences.

One of the limitations I will state is that it is only looking into a small age range which means further research will be needed before generalisations can be made to the wider population. The research i'm doing is not aiming to provide definitive answers it's more an investigation into whether the theory I'm using (uses and gratifications theory) can be used as a basis for companion app development.

I agree with Wiz, slightly harsh reaction and the poor girl has kept her cool thru it all.

If u don't like it, don't comment. It's just a more modern way to get research these days - look how long most the DW usual suspects hang about on here thru the day - everyone lives online

Thanks, but I don't mine some of it is actually helping with thinking of new ways to analyse what I've looked at.
