Hi All,
I'm not sure if the topic properly describes my requirement so:

I have just bought a Technomate TMS 500.

I have loads of Mpegs. AVIs DivX etc. movies on an Iomega 1Tb Network drive

I also have a couple of other network drives including a 500 Gb Iomega, a 500 Gb Targa NDAS (great piece of kit!) and a MyBook (imho a crap piece of kit)

I would like to be able to stream video from any one (or more!) of these drives to the TMS 500 in the living room. The house has a wired (Cat5e) and wireless network. At the moment, the TMS is being used on the wired network and is working fine. I'm not sure about the wired network supporting GigaBit ethernet (a topic for another day / thread / forum perhaps). I'm using a Linksys switch and I think that's designed for 100Meg - question answered I suppose!

However, for the moment, I'd appreciate any suggestions as to how I can use existing resources to achieve my objectives. I don't mind spend a few quid, but in the present climate, I'd obviously prefer an inexpensive or free solution.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Best regards,
eamon.

Looks like good news, Cat5e is the same as CAT6, therefore gigabit. As you mentioned your router will need to be a gigabit one.

Tecnomate have (in december) released a software update that allows samba smb browsing and a media player, as all your network drives support samba it is just a case of upgrading the technomate and it will work

Many thanks for the info. Hawkish. Very good news all round ;) I'll check out the upgrade.

Best regards,

eamon.

Hi again Hawkish,
Sorry to bother you again, but could you please give me a link to the Samba upgrade you mention. I can't find the relevant file(s) on the Technomate website.

Thanks again,
eamon.

it looks like some sort of plugin. In theory it works but i have no experience with technomate boxes so ill move this thread to the technomate room and hopefully someone kind will do a guide for you

all you can play natively on Enigma is ".ts" files...

xvid etc will all need to be reencoded or run through a PC first using vlc to reencode on the fly.

also samba is for sharing files from TM500 out to other system on network, not sharing to it..

Thanks to Hawkish and ToneDeff for your help with this.

Best regards and a Very Happy New Year to all,
eamon.

Just another thought.....

I've been looking at the following Media Players from Iomega and WD in my local PCWorld.....

IOMEGA ScreenPlay TV Link Director Edition Media Player | Media Harddrives | pcworld

WD TV LIVE HD Media Player | Media Harddrives | pcworld

Either of these would probably do what I need. The r4eason I was hoping the TM 500 would do the job has to do with reducing 'box-clutter' as well as cost.

Anyway, I just wondered if anyone has any opinions / experiences / advice on these or similar devices.

My own preference is towards the Iomega based on previous purchases more than just price.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Best Regards,
eamon.
