A first half blitz from St Johnstone flattened Division Two side Arbroath 6-0 as the Saints cruised through to the third round of the Co-Operative Insurance Cup.

A double from Steven Milne plus strikes from Filipe Morais and Kenny Deuchar sandwiched in between ensured the away side were well in control at the break.

Deuchar added a fifth on 67 minutes before a sixth four minutes later from Collin Samuel completed St. Johnstone's dominance and the misery for the home side.

Hibernian also cruised to a win as they defeated Second Division side Brechin City 3-0 at Easter Road as the Scottish Premier League sides breezed through the second round.

Ian Nimmo unfortunately put through his own net after just 10 minutes to throw the away side's game plan out the window. Derek Riordan added another just six minutes later as Hibs effectively put the game to bed.

Defender Paul Hanlon added the third soon after the break to complete the victory on a night which saw no upsets in the Co-Operative Insurance Cup.

Elsewhere, St Mirren had a tougher task in dispatching First Division side Ayr United but they did so through a first half strike from Michael Higdon and an injury-time second from Billy Mehmet which made it 2-0.

Dunfermline came out on top of Wednesday's only tie featuring two clubs from the same division as they dumped out Raith Rovers 3-1 at East End Park.

Northern Irish striker Andy Kirk put the home side into the lead in the first-half before a penalty dispatched by Iain Williamson levelled up the score at the beginning of the second-half.

However, the lead was short-lived as an own goal from defender Mark Campbell restored Dunfermline's lead just two minutes before another Kirk goal put the home side in control on 68 minutes.

Dundee United and Kilmarnock both won, but Hamilton crashed out of the Co-operative Insurance Cup on Tuesday night.

Hamilton's miserable start to the season contined as they went down 2-1 to First Division Ross County.

Paul Di Giacomo set Ross County on their way with the opener on 32 minutes and Richard Brittain added a second on 53 minutes.

Simon Mensing pulled a goal back for Hamilton in the final minute but it was too little too late for the SPL side.

Kevin Kyle celebrated his call-up to the Scotland squad with a goal in Kilmarnock's 3-1 win over First Division outfit Morton at Rugby Park

Conor Sammon gave Killie the lead from the penalty spot on 24 minutes, only for Morton to draw level from the penalty spot a minute before the break courtesy of Ryan McGuffie's spot-kick.

Sammon restored Killie's lead on 64 minutes and Kyle put the game beyond Morton with a third in the final minutes.

Dundee United avoided an upset with a 2-0 success at Second Division side Alloa.

Andis Shala gave United the lead on 23 minutes and David Goodwillie doubled the advantage six minutes before the break.

Inverness eased past Third Division outfit Albion Rovers with a 4-0 victory

Goals from Robert Eagle (8), Adam Rooney (16), Nauris Bulvitis (41) and Grant Munro (57) were enough to give Terry Butcher's side a comfortable win.

David Weatherston's last-gasp goal earned Queen of the South a 2-1 win over fellow First Division side Partick Thistle.

Simon Donnelly fired Partick in front on the half-hour mark, but two goals from Weatherston (64, 90) helped the visitors to victory and a place in the third round.

Dundee got the better of Third Division Forfar 4-2 after a six-goal thriller.

Dundee raced into a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Leigh Griffiths (11) and Mickael Antoine-Curier (15 & 31), but Stephen Tulloch reduced the arrears for Forfar on 55 minutes.

An unfortunate own goal by Andy Tod restored Dundee's three-goal cushion before Ross Campbell netted a consolation for Forfar five minutes later.
