Nani will be at Manchester United today to undergo a medical and be welcomed to the club by manager Sir Alex Ferguson and assistant Carlos Queiroz.

It's been a wild 24 hours for Portugal international winger Nani, who played against Kuwait yesterday before hopping on a plane bound for Manchester.

"The English championship is completely different to ours," said Nani, "but it is always good to play for a great club.

"I am very anxious because I want to know everything about Manchester United and how big a club it actually is. I know that I will always have to give my best every day, every game."

Foster in cruciate blow

Manchester United have confirmed that Ben Foster has suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury.

The England keeper will now need surgery to correct the problem, which means he will miss the start of the next Premiership season.

Foster has spent the last two seasons on loan at Watford, after United sealed his signature in 2005 from Stoke.

The 24-year-old was due to return to Old Trafford this summer to compete with Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczack for the number one jersey.

However, he will now be sidelined for a number of months.

A United spokesperson confirmed the blow, saying:: "Ben Foster has a cruciate ligament injury in his right knee and will require an operation in two to three weeks' time."

This is real bad news was hoping the lad would make it now he will be out for a few months unfortunately

Sir Alex fit to keep on going

Sir Alex Ferguson says his health is the number one factor in deciding how long he will continue to be United manager, but the Reds boss insists players like Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo have given him a new lease of life.

He refuses to put a date on his retirement, but it certainly doesn't look like coming soon. In an exclusive interview with local radio station Key 103 - being aired all this week - he is relaxed

"As long as my health is good [I'll keep going]," he said, "that is without question the consideration I have to make. My healthy is very good, I hope so anyway. I feel good and that is a determining factor to carry on.

"There will come a point when I retire, but when it is I’ve no idea. I’m taking it game by game. The young people help you, and I’ve got some good young players at the club. I’ve got good players, but not just that, they’ve got good personalities.
"Rooney and Ronaldo are fun to watch in training. You seem them getting up to their tricks, the two of them are likely a double act. They are up to everything, and that keeps you young, you know."

Ronaldo's performances in particular were a source of great satisfaction for Sir Alex, who successfully pursuaded the young Portuguese winger that the fall-out from last summer's World Cup would soon blow over. His words were certainly prescient, in no small part because Ronaldo was "the star of the season".

"I think good people and people with purpose respond to adversity very well," he said. "If you take Eric Cantona for instance, when he got that suspension for eight months, he came back and we won the double.

Tommy Smith, the first Liverpool captain to lift a European trophy, is in hospital after suffering a heart attack at his home. Smith collapsed while mowing the lawn, before managing to crawl into the house before wife Sue called an ambulance and he was taken to Fazackerley hospital.
The 62-year-old former defender will stay in hospital until the weekend when he is expected to be discharged. "Everyone at Liverpool sends Tommy their very best wishes for a speedy recovery," said Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton. "He is a legend of the club and remains a very popular figure in the press box on match days. We look forward to seeing him again fit and well next season."

Nani passes Reds medical

United have confirmed that Nani passed his medical in Manchester on Wednesday.

The Portuguese international is set to join the Reds after United agreed a deal with his current club Sporting Lisbon late last month.

Following the completion of his medical at Carrington, the 20-year-old winger was given a tour of Old Trafford.

Nani recently expressed his delight at the prospect of joining United, saying that he is prepared to work hard to earn a place in Sir Alex Ferguson's team.

"This is a dream move," he told reporters recently. "It won't be easy to get a place in the first team, but I am ready for the challenge."

Evans to get United chance

Highly-rated young Reds defender Jonny Evans will be back at Old Trafford next season attempting to earn his stripes in the United first team.

After impressing on loan with Royal Antwerp in the first half of the 2006/07 campaign, Belfast-born Jonny was handed his Northern Ireland debut and then helped Roy Keane's Sunderland side reach the Premiership.

Keane was hopeful of retaining the 19-year-old's services for his first season in the top-flight, but Sir Alex has made it clear that Evans has done enough to prove he is capable of pushing for first-team experience.

"The manager has made it clear that I won't be going out on loan again," Evans told the Belfast Telegraph. "I'll be back at United and we'll see what happens. I'll be involved in pre-season and he has more or less said that I will get games."

Although Evans was willing to return to Sunderland next season and gain experience at the Stadium of Light, as a life-long Red he is understandably delighted to get his shot at his childhood dream.

"I want to play for Manchester United," he added. "I am a Manchester United fan and it has been my aim since I signed for the club to get into the first team. The incentive is there for me now and I want to be good enough to be playing for United."

I think this thread deserves to be a stcky, and kept serious Man Utd talk.
no wandering off about other teams, if you want to start your own thread.

Is there really any need for that? not everybody on DW is a Man Utd fan and most of the topics mentioned above can be covered in the summser transfer thread or just here in sport in general?

I'm quite sure there are Man Utd forums people can join if they think it's that important?

Reds Set For Anderson Fight

United face a legal battle over their £17million signing Anderson. The Home Office are set to reject the Brazilian's application for a work permit - putting his big-money move from Porto on hold. Current regulations specify that non-EU players must have played at least 75 per cent of their country's games in the past two years. Anderson has yet to play a full international but has been named in their squad for this summer's Copa America. United will appeal and are understood to have already started putting together a legal team for the challenge.
Ali Martin, The Sun

I knew that was comin, they always do this to non-EU players thats so many amazing south americans end up goin to europe.
Yep home office allow all these lyin asylum seekers in but dont allow ppl who actually will be doin sumthin productive rather than ppl who will jus drain our tax money

Man Utd's Anderson receives work permit boost

Anderson will receive his permit

Manchester United's concerns over work permit problems for new signing Anderson have received a boost.

The 19-year-old was called into Brazil's squad for the Copa America in Venezuela.

United expect to be turned down, as Anderson has yet to make his international debut, but will appeal.

New Portuguese winger Nani passed his medical yesterday.

Man Utd's Brown keen on Newcastle move

Newcastle United are lining up a bid for Manchester United defender Wes Brown.

The Times says Brown, 27, has one more year of his deal at Manchester United and with Jonny Evans and Gerard Piqu returning to Old Trafford after loan spells, Brown's opportunities may be limited.

Brown is understood to be enthusiastic at the prospect of moving to the North East and should be available for less than £5 million.

Portugal coach: Nani can be as good as Man Utd's Ronaldo

Portugal coach Rui Cacador believes Nani can develop into as exciting a player as his new Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cacador said: "Nani is following the path of Ronaldo, who played in the tournament in Toulon, then broke into the Sporting Lisbon first team and later joined Manchester United. Nani is going to achieve the same.

"With hard work, Nani will reach the highest level. He won't just be a good European player, but a great one."

Parma want to buy Man Utd striker Rossi

Parma have approached Manchester United for striker Giuseppe Rossi.

While Juventus and Porto have expressed interest about taking the Italy U21 international on-loan next season, Parma president Tommaso Ghirardi is ready to discuss a permanent deal with United for the youngster.

Rossi is likely to cost over £7 million for the ambitious Ghirardi.

Nani Delight At Portuguese Connection

Unitedtrio_227697.jpg

Manchester United's new star signing Nani has set his sights on a Portuguese-speaking trio running riot in the Premiership next season.

Last month United swooped for winger Nani and Brazilian playmaker Anderson from Portuguese clubs Sporting Lisbon and Porto in a £30million transfer spree.

Now Nani cannot wait for the prospect of playing with fellow Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo as well as Anderson.

He told www.uefa.com: "At least I'll have them to speak Portuguese with and they will be important especially in the initial period of adapting to a different country.

"As for the three of us playing together, it would be great to play alongside them but that's up to the coaches to decide.

"They are two of the best players I know so it's a privilege to have them as club-mates.

"Any player would like to play at Manchester United. They are one of the major clubs in Europe. All I have to do now is to keep working and give my best to prove to be worthy of the confidence shown in me. I know I'm young and I have still to learn many things."

United's chief executive David Gill says the new arrivals - and Owen Hargreaves is also joining from Bayern Munich - will make Sir Alex Ferguson's side even stronger.

He told Sky Sports News: "We've got a large squad now, there should be some people leaving but not many at all.

"We've got some great players coming back who have been on loan.

"We want competition for places, we are looking to improve the squad. We are not resting on our laurels, we want to do even better than last year on the pitch.

"Alex is always looking to improve the quality on what we have got out there."

One player who may be leaving is Gabriel Heinze - the Argentinian left-back continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid as replacement for Roberto Carlos.

Meanwhile, United have granted a free transfer to Floribert Ngalula, a 20-year-old Belgian midfielder once viewed as "the new Patrick Vieira".

Ngalula had been on the books at Anderlecht before moving to United but his hopes he would break into the first team had a major blow when he suffered a serious hip injury at the start of the 2005/06 season.

United have also granted free transfers to three other reserve players: defender Phil Marsh, winger Jamie Mullan, and midfielder Danny Rose who spent much of last season on loan at Oxford.

Two other reserves have not been offered professional terms and have been released. They are keeper Lee Crockett and striker Aaron Burns.
