Hi I have recently moved into my girlfriends and i have taken my sky box with me and bought a sky dish n lnb. Last night i conected the dish to the box and put the signal strength on screen and went outside and held the dish on different parts of the south facing wall to see if i can get a signal as my gf doesnt want me to drill holes and then find oit it wont work in that position! Is this method going to work as i couldnt get anything! Do i need to secure the dish and hope it will work there and start doin more accurate adjusting! I just thought id get a flicker or something on the signal strength just to know its goin to pick up there! Reason for all this is there is a tree in next doors gargen that im worried my block signal as i recently installed a freeview aerial for bedroom tv and had to move it again because the tree was blocking its reception!

Any advice welcome thanks

If you go to dishpointer.com, you can see the direction that your dish needs to point to. You should be aiming at 28.2. Make sure there are no obstructions in the line of site, including any growing trees. Using a neighbours' dish as a rough guide also helps.

Fine tune dish alignment until you get the maximum quality reading

I jave looked at nextdoors angle etc and tried to copy it holding the dish and bracket where id like to fit it and i got no reaction on the sky box signal strength bar! Is it not sensitive enough to show anything if i just pass a signal? Meaning i need to fix the dish and then try? Dont want to make holes in wall if it doesnt work in that position!

Thanks

Have you tried calling a local fitter. Most will fit a dish and run cables to two rooms for under 50 quid. Also worth fitting the shotgun cable if you had not planned on doing so for future upgrades.

Minor movements make all the difference. Not only left/right but also up/down.

The wall will have to be drilled, either by you or someone else. If you think it should work there, i.e. same wall as your neighbour and no obstructions in front of the dish then follow your heart.

Only worry is a tree about 6-8 meters away as tall as a house, will that effect it?

The beam comes down at approx 25 degrees. You have to put the dish high enough so that the beam clears the tree and reaches the satellite dish. Allow for growth on the tree.

What elevation does dish pointer give you?

Tan (elevation degrees)= height/distance

Based on 6m from obstruction, your dish at the very least can only be 2.8 meters lower than the highest part of the obstruction. For 8m it is 3.7m (I've used 25.4 degrees).

I tried again last night, after lookn at dish pointer i realise the tree isnt in the way! I still cant get any reaction on the sky box when stood outside with the dish in hand pointing in the correct direction. Any ideas?

There is the possibility that the LNB is faulty. Maybe try LNB at another location where dish is aligned?

As previously stated, if you have clear line of sight, it should be straight forward. I don't think you will have much joy with holding the dish in hand. It has to be straight and level. LNB also has to be skewed/twisted correctly.

Is there any fixing near your preferred location where you can fix the dish to? You are not meant to fix the bracket to the mortar as it can work lose. You can for trial only, drill two holes for the top holes and fix the bracket with the top screws. Trial it. If no joy, you can always fill in the mortar.

Otherwise call in someone. Good luck.
