I've got the 'wanderlust' (again!) so a European tour in 2015 is looking good.

Problem is I have two elderly dogs. Father-in-law has offered to look after them (lives just around the corner). I don't think they'll be good in kennels as both have health issues and one takes fits.

Father-in-law is 86 but fit and takes his dog out twice a day for an hour walk. He'd probably be offended if we declined his offer to look after ours for the duration.

I'm thinking we should try a couple of 2-3 day breaks and see how he copes.

Your thoughts?

When you say Lives round corner , are you planning on leaving the dogs at home and Father will pop in two.three times a day to feed and walk? or would he be staying with them at his/yours?
Either way what about getting some NICE young village lad or lass to "HELP" him to look after the dogs but also to keep an eye on the 86 yr old. The youngster could walk the dogs and keep an eye on DAD at the same time for a bit of pocket money and dad wont get offended, well not as much as not having any part in it. Tell dad your letting the lad/lass help so they can see what the responsibility of looking after a dog means before their parents decide if they can have a dog

IF the Father In Law is fit and it sounds as though he is, why waste time on tester trips it does not take long to get back from Europe most expense on trips is the Travel Expense plus if you go for only a day or two you spend more time traveling than than experiencing Europe.

My folks have been faced with a similar scenario too, old dog (which took fits) but no shortage of offers to look after her. But my dad was reluctant to burden anyone with the responsibility in case anything untoward happened. But my mum talked him round and as it happens all went well. Things are lot easier now than say 20+ years ago wrt communication though, so if at any time advice was needed, a simple phone call would be just that- simple.
I do like @shaun127 's idea too though.

PS Be sure to pop in if you get down this far!

The tester trips would be in the UK M8, just to see how he coped. I'm liking the idea of a helper :)

taking the dogs with you not an option?

H,H I have been in your position, we had the opportunity to go away and my brother who is 78 offered to look after my 15y old dog, he was most insistant that he should do it, I went ahead with it but asked my neighbour to lend an eye, my brother not only managed 3 walks of a half an hour daily but also went to the kennels and got a rescue dog for himself he is now very much more outgoing and loves his new dog, he says looking after my dog has given him a new lease of life,

Trust your father mate he's been there and done that

Regards. dave
