After buying a new laptop with no RS232 COM port i bought one of these from ebay (search USB COMport)for about £6. Everything looked good on the sellers page and couldnt wait for it to arrive. it turned up, i installed the driver disc and............

NOTHING!!

After hours of online searching and finding not much help for them ive decided to make this how to. Enjoy.

If you find this tut helpfull please click the thanks button at the bottom of the post. Cheers.

heres the quick version

plug the cable into a usb port, the found new hardware wizard will start.
install the drivers from the disc as prompted
go to control panel
dpouble click system
click hardware
clickdevice manager
click ports (com lpt)
double click usb-serial bridge
click port settings
click advanced
click comport number and change to com1
click OK

after doing this TAKE NOTE OF THE ACTUAL USB PORT YOU ARE USING on your laptop as if you plug the lead into a different one it WILL NOT WORK

you now have a perfect com1 for any program that needs it using usb

First click START and open control panel

1.JPG

Next double click SYSTEM

2.JPG

Click HARDWARE

3.JPG

Now click DEVICE MANAGER

4.JPG

Click PORTS (COM LPT) then Double click USB SERIAL BRIDGE

5.JPG

Click PORT SETTINGS

6.JPG

Click ADVANCED

7.JPG

You should now see the following

8.JPG

Click COM port number and change to COM1

9.JPG

Now click OK

Now make a mental note of the actual USB port you have connected to on your computer if you have more than one, as if you use another port you will have to install all the drivers again, and the cable will not work properly

But you now have a 100% perfect RS232 COM1 using USB

Enjoy :proud:

you can now plug your null modem lead into the usb lead and it will work fine, the usb lead does not plug directly into your receiver

Nice One Digi !!!!!!

I upgraded my motherboard ( pc ) and when i bought my 1500ci , i needed a serial
connection but did not have one, so i bought a Serial upgrade board from CCL Bradford with no drivers, he said windows would pick it up, or you,ll get the drivers off the net. So i took it home, put it in the pc and nothing. So i scoured the net for over an hour and still
got nowt. So i took it back and he tried to download the drivers from the manufacturers and guess what ?? No way. So i got my money back, went down to the shop where i got my TM8 and got the same cable you have posted with driver disk and not looked back since. So yes mate i think its a very good posting and with all the setup info.

I,m not knocking CCL because i have used them for many years with no problems , but
on this occasion i got a bad service, which even CCL could not sort out. So Beware Guys.

Hi ya`ll

Anyone with the drivers RS232, lost mine and when i downloaded the drivers and plug in the usb it says unkown device :(

I cant get my cable working at all on win7 its showing up in deive manager as "Prolific USB to Serial" on Com 6. In advanced I can change the comport to 2 but still not working with receiver. Would be great to get it sorted as I wouldnt need 2 PC's in livingroom :)

i dont know windows7, but in the device manager settings, youll need to change it from com6 to com2, then restart m8

Done that digidude but still nothing through HDVB connecting to servers ok but not opening channels

Works fine through WinXP so maybe its a Win 7 issue

Hi All,

I'm a recent owner of a 7100HD, I was adding some channels manually last night and after one particular channel I'm having the same issue as the previous poster. I read in serveral forums that a factory reset should resolve the problem but when I get to the loader menu by holding to menu button on power up. I cant seem to find an option for the factory reset.

could someone pls advise.

I thought I was a techie until I joined here and now I know I'm nowhere near !!!

Thanks for the info, great post !
