Quite possibly my first ever post in this room.
I can forgive spelling mistakes but "definitely" and "defiantly" are 2 different words with 2 totally different meanings. This error has become a mini pet hate of mine lately so I decided to put "defiantly" in the search box and look at the results.

There were well over 100 results so had a look at the first 30 minus a couple of threads with far too many pages to bother with. Seventeen different members' making the same mistake!!, is it an epidemic???. Each time I read a post with this error (which in my opinion should now be punishable by death) I can't help but visualise the scenarios. For example;

Defiant Member walks into Game to buy an Xbox One because he is "defiantly" going to buy one.

Shop assistant "Can I help you Sir?"
Defiant Member "NO"
Shop assistant "Are you looking to buy something today?"
Defiant Member "Maybe I am and maybe I'm not but I am"defiantly" not leaving till I have one.
Shop assistant "If you don't want to tell me what you want could you point to it instead?"
Defiant Member "I could but I won't and you can't make me.

Rant over, jeez that feels really good. Will defiantly post in this room again

Add 'me' and 'I' ...

'Mrs M and I thank you' but 'Thankyou from Mrs M and me'

It's not '10 items or less' in Tesco, it's '10 items or fewer'

Lol.

There are numerous other annoying spelling & grammar 'anomalies' that can be not only irritating, but quite misleading.

I frequently see eBay listings where something has been "lying in a draw" for instance.

I know we can all make spelling mistakes or 'typos', but getting totally the wrong word can make quite a difference.

Even punctuation can completely alter the meaning of a sentence.

"Let's go and eat Grandad"
Vs.
"Let's go and eat, Grandad"

Good grammar. The difference between knowing your shit & knowing you're shit.

Although I can't think of any examples off the top of my head, there are loads of words that sound the same and even spelt the same, with completely different meanings. Several words meaning the exact same thing. Words with silent letters (what the hell is that all about)
Are all languages just as crazy or is it just English? :)

It's dam spell check..changes the bloody words..

I take the point made about the anomalies of the English language, but getting back to chookey's rant; "defiantly" and definately" don't even sound remotely the same when spoken, so it's pure bloody laziness to mix them up.

The confusion between "draw" and "drawer" usually gets me into Victor Meldrew mode too.
