Hi to all

Just had to format my c:/ drive , sick as f**k lol.

Downloaded a program ghost 9 , but it will not boot up on cd or dvd to restore my full c:/ drive , any one know a program that will do that , in case my pc dies again lol, don’t want to install all the updates again and SP2 any more.

Help

Cheers Garry

if you formatted it not a lot m8, you could try spinrite 6, i think that can recover formatted volumes, but if your trying to recover from a cd or somthing and it won't boot and it's deffo a bootable disk check in your bios and make sure C: or Hard dirve is not set before cd-rom in the boot order.

@garrytate

hi m8 are u saying u have formatted and reloaded and are now in a position to take a ghost image to save for future failure, or u want to try and recover the data from your previous working machine ?

if its first senario then ghost will do what u want, u can write image to cd/dvd and make it a bootable cd/dvd or u can use boot floppy and restore from image.
acronis true image a very similar product although never used myself but supposed to be very good.

if its second scenario u need summat like active@partion recovery.

if u have more info on specific problem u have then post back

Cheers for the info peeps

I just whant to backup my fresh drive onto dvd , in case it goes off again.

i will have a play about with ghost9, let you know how i get on.

Cheers Garry

for quickness, if u look at ghost 1 of the options is to make boot disk, this will give u a boot disk and disk 2 the ghost disk.

dont know your system but do u have 1 disk 1 partition ? or do u have multiple partitions on the disk ?

if u have just 1 disk and 1 partition then u will have to write image direct to cd/dvd, if u have multiple disks or multiple partitions then u can save the image to the hdd. (that sounds a bit confusinng)

ill try again

it u have just a c: drive then backup to cd/dvd
if u have c: d: e: etc u can backup c: to d: or e:
u cant backup image to same partition u are backing up.

ghost will also backup complete drive to another

anyway have a play, and what u want to do is exactly what ghost is designed for.

Hi hatab

In the end i used ghost 2003 to make a full backup image to dvd's

ThAnK's @troopy @hatab

For you time and help

Garry

I back up the whole c:/drive to another spare hdd that way if anything goes seriously wrong I can just plug in the new drive.. I find ghost 2003 the easiest to use..

@pyroneus if u format the disk and then load windows then apply sp2 and all updates than install av firewall software and msoffice and all the other apps u use, but b4 u start using the machine u take a ghost image. this gives u a known good starting point if u need to re-install in the future.

to do the above even with a fast machine can and does take hours and hours, with a ghost image u can take a fresh hdd install in machine run ghost and restore and be up and running in 20 mins tops.

one nice warm feeling, unless u prefer to sit there feeding cd's into your machine............

bootable ghost?

There is a boot cd on the net call bartpe....this is basically xp on a cd ... one of the tools is ghost32 this runs ghost in a window. very handy as while its ghosting you can surf the net etc...! i have used many boot disks at work and at home... i wouldnt use anything else now..!
