I have bought a laptop off e-bay and when I have tried to install windows xp on it I have been asked for registration code. When I enter the code I have from the box. I am told it isn't valid. Has anyone got access to windows which I could use. I think I have made a blunder buying the laptop tbh, it seems to be 32 bit so I can't get internet explorer 7 or above on it and therefore can't download my mcafee virus protection.

Any help or advice appreciated - as you can tell I am. computer dinosaur so go Easton me.

;o)

Thanks for looking

thanks @alimac I was hoping someone could point me to a safe place to acquire windows 7 as I'm not keen to be downloading something while I have no virus protection. I only want to be using the laptop for a very occasional download and to use calibre to convert books for my kindle.

Linux Mint 17 "Qiana" - Cinnamon (32-bit)

Linux Mint 17 "Qiana" - MATE (32-bit)

Win 7 x32

I have a couple of old (very old!) laptops kicking about- still working but painfully slow, even on XP. Would it be feasible to run one of the Linux editions on them? And what's the difference between the 'Cinnamon' and 'Mate' editions?

download both versions mate

run from disk without installing see if you like it before committing to install

should work ok

I can give you direct d/l link todigital river for all iso versions of windows, these are all legitimate isofiles...So you will need an activation key to activate it.
If you don’t have a key it don’t matter, you can run in trial period for 30 days, after the 30 days ,if you don’t activateit, you won’t be able to have a screen saver, the system will just run as normal, you will just get annoying pop up’s telling you it’s not genuine.
Let me know what you want 64bit or32bit.

If you have been running windowsxp .your probably better with 32bit, how much ram do you have at the moment onyour current system?

2Gb of RAM, I have a Dell Latitude D531 Laptop

Dual Core AMD Turion 64 X2 2.0GHz / 2GB RAM / 80GB HDD

Like I say, just need it for the occasional download and for my kindle library.

Thanks for replying.

Re: windows 7

Ok original to your problem. first a question did you meant to say you have product code on the back of the laptop and it doesnt work when you install from retail and then put the code? if that is so then here is the thing you can do..
#Note mod can delete this post if it is morally wrong #
Install the windows xp from already activated cd/dvd doesnt matter if its genuine or pirated .
Now after you are done use Keyupdatetool.exe from microsoft here is the link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=50346&clcid=0x409
It will ask for new product code, and you can use your product code there and it shall accept. (sometimes at one try sometimes after 2 or 3 tries)
I usually had success when no service pack was installed. (it was quite a long time back but the link still works).
I used to do that to my compaq evo 510 sff desktop as it came fully formated without any os/cd/dvd(when i bought it secondhand) but it had xp pro code at the back of the computer.
