Hardware laptop dc jack

I am changing the dc Jack on my Packard bell laptop.I have disassembled the laptop and ready to remove dc Jack.

It is soldered in. When I resolder the new one, is it safe to connect my laptop charger in the dc Jack, as just bare motherboard on my desk and check voltage on the points with a multimeter. So if I get 17.5 volts I know dc Jack is working before I reassemble... ?

Going to get this done later today. I have a desolder gun & decent iron so should be ok. There are five solder points exactly, should I be getting 17.5 volts on each of them but only on some...

Tested the current one and getting no voltage on any so it's def faulty, well I kind of knew that already....will get new one on, hopefully will go ok

This is harder than I expected, I cannot remove the jack. I've used a soldering iron with wick, desolder gun and hot air. It won't come loose, I've carefully used side cutters to tear connector off, one hook came off nicely but I'm left with five small hooks still lodged in their holes.

no idea what to do now, I'm scared to use too much heat, have been at 300 degrees already but hooks are not coming free...

This is going to sound weird but add more solder to the joints. heat it up and use your wick whilst applying some gentle pressure should come out fine.

edit: just for the future if you are doing it again. try using solder glue for a repair. works a treat

I use a heated desoldering pump to remove items such as the dc socket. Make sure to apply fresh solder to the joint so that when the pump is activated all molten solder is removed leaving a clean joint.

this works brill guys

de soldering braid wire

flux Pen non-clean

plus use a variable temperature soldering station so you don't burn the pads ect

and always keep your solder iron tip clean :)

old thread but giving you good advice .....
