This machine won't boot beyond the F2/F12 for setup/boot options screen. None of these options will open up though. If I press escape at this point I can see that the cpu, bios version, memory and hard drive have been recognised. I have checked out the hard drive, memory and wireless and they are ok.
Stripped it down and checked all power rails and everything appears fine.
I'm wondering if the bios is corrupt and been looking for ways to update it. I can only get into the bios screen with the hard drive removed and doing a hard reset. When I successfully get into the bios its' a coin toss whether or not the usb dvd drive has been detected and available as a boot device.

I tried Hirens' with its' mini xp but it doesn't have the drivers' for usb drives so can't use a stick to update bios.
Anyone suggest an alternative to mini xp which will recognise a usb stick?

Thought I'd best add that the bios update is a windows exe file

Yes, tried the reset to default mate.
The link you posted is very helpful regarding the US files especially.

Just tried it with an external floppy but can't get into the bios with it connected to try it. Going to try later with it on cd and see if I fare any better. The problem as stated earlier that only occasionally is the dvd drive recognised in bios.

After a few attempts got the cd to boot and updated the bios. Netbook working normally now.
Thanks again for that link Him Her. Could never have resolved this using the EU version without desoldering and reprogramming the chip.
