I have an acer aspire netbook which froze the other day while mrs using it, she powered it off but now it wont boot, it gets as far as the xp splash screen hangs a few seconds, the blue screen of death flashes up for a fraction of a second then it resets and tries to reboot again, this loop continues anyone any idea of what it might be, i'm suspecting hard disk but not sure, there is quite a bit of stuff on it that i would like to keep and also if i replace the HDD how do i get my os back on, theres no optical drive, there is the option to boot from network, is there an easy way to do this so i can remove my bits and bobs, (backup) after that i dont care really..

Does it boot into safe mode? If it does go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings > uncheck 'Automatic Restart'. This stops XP rebooting when it BSoDs, allowing you to note down the "stop error".

Unless the hard drive has died, you should be able to view the data from another install of Windows by using a caddy. If the data is corrupt, the recovery software on Hiren's boot CD should be able to get them back - don't recover to the drive you are recovering from.

XP can be installed from USB stick.

You can recover your data by installing a custom copy of Windows 7 if your tinking of upgrading , all your old data will be placed into a folder on the C: drive named Windows.old for you.

It will tell you this as you go through the process of a custom install,

***** DON NOT DO A WINDOWS UPGRADE *****

Hope this helps

sorry guys I just saw your replies, turned out to be damaged sectors on the HDD left it to a repair shop, and they managed to repair the existing drive so happy days, have to collect it tomorrow so first thing i'l do is back up the stuff i need and see how it performs.
thanks for the replies,
installer.

In my experience bad sectors will be followed by more and more bad sectors. When you get it back make sure to backup anything you want as it's likely to fail again.

When it does get, a new drive and install it.

I got one and every so often it does that and needs windows reinstalling. Is it me or does anyone think that the older aspire ones used sub standard parts.

Acer did have a bad rep for a while, especially for their laptops.

Their rep seems to have improved since the launch of the Revo marque...

i install wireless bb and have this laptop on roofs and ladders etc, had it perform flawless for 2 years, only problem i had was this one, the problem with reinstalling windows or replacing the drive is it didnt come with a windows operating disk, everything pre installed, so would have to buy new copy of windows no?

if its 2 years old then its probably xp, you will have the sticker on the laptop for the cd code.

there are many places to download a copy of the disk off the net. or borrow a copy :)

you just need a copy of the version the same as your sticker and in practice no need to buy another version.

Well as suspected, the acer HDD is still acting up, can get it to boot up in safe mode though, does anyone know how i can transfer all my emails and contacts onto a usb stick, i'l try reinstall windows but i want to keep all my emails etc.

thanks guys.
