Hi everyone
I can find my way around a computer usually so I'm not a complete novice but i've had this problem several times.

I back up everything important to an external drive currently a maxtor.

I keep getting the above message and losing pictures and music. I have all the files on my pc so I can back up again and I'm in the process of reformatting the external drive.

I've just found out that I should use the "safely remove hardware" instead of just switching the drive off at the mains.

I know it sometimes corrupts if I leave it on when I turn off the pc.

This drive is only about 5 months old and it replaced a drive that had all the same problems so unless it is a coincidence it must be something I'm doing.

Also sometimes if I backup by dragging a large folder of pictures some of the directories are corrupted and I can't delete them (that's why I'm reformatting)

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance

is that happening on the PC where you are reading from or on the Hard Drive that you are writing to?
What file system are they? (both the pc and the ext hard drive)

The external harddrive is the one that gets corrupted (which is NTFS)

My pc's hard drive is NFTS and has a recovery partition which is fat32

Hi, when you say you replaced it do you mean the whole thing or just the drive inside the caddy?

Its just that this sounds like a problem I had and it was the caddy that was faulty.

Try going to a command prompt and typing
Code:
You don't have permission to view the code content. Log in or register now.
Replace x with the drive letter of the disk.

This will scan for error and attempt to repair them, a little less drastic than a reformat.
