As the title says , I am a complete computer numpty but I am going to have ago ,what I want to know is how do I save my drivers & programs to my external hard drive .
Then I need a dummy's guide to wiping xp and starting again .
The reason I am doing this is my computer is so slow ,I have run tuneup utility's and registry mechanic , and added an extra 512 of ram , And no I wish to start a fresh .
I have had a look on the web, but I need it in layman's terms as I don't want to feck it up !
Thanks in advance for any helpful info !

just put your disc in and reboot m8 and do wot it says on the screen .. but l would try a repair install myself. there might be a few files missing

Hi smirnoff ,thanks for the quick reply there is one other thing as I said I have just added another 512 mb of ram but when I go into system properties it says I have only 512 of ram ? ,is it not just a case of plug it in and away you go ?

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information about how to do this, please refer to your computer's documentation or contact your computer manufacturer.

Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.

(You can also boot with a Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run WINNT.EXE in the I386 folder on the CD)

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.
