Merry Crimbo all,

Got XP running on my system, I want to try installing Linux as a 2nd OS. I'm gonna have a go at making a image for the dreambox 500-C.

My system:-

IDE1 - ATA - Music/Pictures - E:
IDE2 - ATA - Backup Files - F:

SATA1 - XP OS - C:
SATA2 - Empty - D:

I wanted to install Debian onto the SATA2 drive as its sitting there empty, Debian can't see my SATA drives, only my ATA drives. Tried Ubuntu on the Live CD, then choose the install to HDD option, this can see my ATA and SATA drives but when I choose to install it on SATA2 - D: it does the partition walkthrough with me, then looks to install ubuntu, tells me to reboot but the system can only see XP as the OS.

Once I'm in XP and I goto Disk Manamgment and look at SATA2 - D: it has split up into partitions as I've asked but the filesystem on the newely created partition is marked as unknown and its empty.

Is this cos I'm trying to use SATA drives with Linux?

Any help much appreciated.
Thx....

you'll have to change first boot device to SATA2 m8 as its set to boot from SATA1 at the moment

Just put on vmware

then get a distro and run it with vmware in a window on your xp machine, it's how I do it.

I can send you a dvd ready to go for compiling if you pm me an adddress.

Or check pt-1's dbox helpfile it has a link to a compress ubuntu and vmware player.

I use a windows shared folder to transfer from linux to windows and back again.

This way you can still play windows apps while the linux is compiling the image :)

better still ,if thats what you want decisions ,decisions ,decisions

Doh.

The live cd's work great, but as you are aware if you have used them is they are real slooooooow to boot.

I just wanted to have it installed on SATA2 as its sitting there empty. Changing the boot order doesnt do anything......all I get is 'Verifiying DMI Pool Data' when selecting SATA2 as my boot drive.

Nightmare!

I've recently put uBuntu on my lappy, with XP as the alternative OS, works great....still learning with linux though.....can't install this Banshee thing at the moment...I digress...do I remember reading that the grubb boot manager doesn't support SATA ..??? I think...

if linux has a problem with sata drives then shift your music and stuff onto sata2 and install linux on ide1

Thx for all the help.

In the end up I reformatted the SATA2 disk and started from fresh. Created a 98% EXT3 partition and a 2% linux-swap.

Installed, GRUB kept getting installed to my IDE1 drive, so now I just boot from IDE1 and use GRUB as my boot loader.

Thx again.......
