Hi Guys and gals , my first post on this forum

My sky uk subscription ended yesterday , i cancelled it due to the continued rising cost

I have been looking on fleabay uk for a hd receiver which can also do a bit more

It seems the price of the s9 is down to £80 delivered . My budget was around £100 so is the box i should go for or is there a better alternative ?

I have never used a linux system either on pc or box so im a complete novice at this but i can read and learn . If anyone can point me in the right direction of a complete novice guide i would really appreciate that

Any comments or suggestions will also be greatfully received

Many thanks

would spend a bit more and get a better boxs mate ie blade or spider

Blade a better box but more than £100. its also only got a now and next guide but does play .avi and .mkv. other than that I don't see much diff. few friends got the openbox and have no probs. Good price at £80 now as well.

go for the openbox its an excellent box to plug and play there is a guide on here at the top of the section all you need to watch football is a cline which can be entered using the remote or by memory stick from the usb port

Hi

For the price openbox is gr8 value for money, cant go wrong for £80 and hd as well.

Epg is naff but other than that good for a cheap end box and easy to setup, clines is easy to input via usb as pointed out above.

Regards

Thank you , so would you all think the openbox s9 is better than the technomate TM600 ?

Im trying to decide between the 2 , the epg seems better on the technomate

I'm guessing that there are pluses and minuses on either side.

Just one other aspect to consider is that the OpenboxS9 has HDMI where as the Technomate does not.

Ok after so much reading im sticking with my original plan and buying an openbox s9

Will hopefully get it this week and then the full or headaches will start

Thanks to all commented in thread

you wont have any head aches the only thing wrong with the openbox is it's epg just buy a tv paper to find out whats on or if you have a smart phone get sky+ widget from the market it works well for finding out what is on but not setting recordings !!!

Thanks edogg. Yeah i got an iphone 4 with the sky+ app .

How do you set it to record uk stations , is it done with an old fashioned timer ( start - finish time ) and channel number or other ?

What is recommended to use as a storage device an external hard drive or large flash drive ? I have a 250gb 2.5 sata spare at the moment i was planning on buying and enclosure and using this as my storage device

Well the Technomate TM600 is not a HD box for a start it's SD only. So if you want HD then yes the Openbopx S9 is better. TM600 is Enigma 1 open source linux though so theres EPG plugins and other plugins available so more flexible and more features than a Openbox...but TM software images UR TEAM are poor quality.

So given the choice definitely go for a Openbox over a TM600...

for recording it is like an early vhs tape recorder you set the time the duration and the channel. A harddrive would be better as it is hi-definition which takes a lot of disk space I personally dont bother recording as everything is repeated until you are sick of it and if you miss the repeats you can download it and watch it like that

Would I gain anything by using my own sky card ( no subscription ) in the box , I have read the guide on setting this up but don't think I will gain anything as I have a c-line already sorted out?

you get more channels than sky broadcasts any way so no need to use the sky card

Got the box today and have it up and running . Im really impressed with it especially for the money . The picture in hd in very good .

Just watching the football match between Man Utd & Chelsea . Im thinking the answer is no but does the red button work on a saturday night where you can choose to view different matches ? Hope this ok to ask on the forum
