I have had my HD LCD over a year now and not yet watched anything in HD. I have no PS3 or HD dvd player. I have downloaded one of the blue planet 720p divx episodes and wondered if i can play this from my pc onto my tv just to test it out?

if your tv has a vga or dvi socket you could get a long lead and use your tv as a monitor.

using vga will improve it considerably. If your TV has a dvi port, then it will be even better. However you probably are not viewing this in HD.

I have an HD media player that has HDMI and plays Divx, prior to this I had a linux machine playing them for me via vga. The improvement when I moved up was astounding.

As an aside, Blue Planet was one of the very first TV programmes to be shot in HD.

will it not display the resolution on the tv as you switch to your vga or dvi input?

also just had a look around and dvi can apparently carry the hd signal as well as hdmi just without the audio

Not meaning to hyjack the thread, but it's sort of related lol

I'm thinking of getting one of these media players.

I've started a thread in the PC section witch gave me some usefull info.

The media centre has a HDMI socket on it but doesn't mention either HDDVD or Blueray.

Would this thing just play the HD DIVX like what fatspanner has downloaded as it's a pc at the end of the day, or would it be a case of getting some software to handle Blueray or HDDVD files???

yeah, he can do that via vga as well - the point I was making that whilst it is very good quality - its not got anything on using an HDMI cable.

what kind of graphic card do you have I have a old geforce 6000 and i cant play blue ray what so eva

What CPU do you have?
If its a AMD X2 or Intel C2D or above you should have no problems at all. If your video is stutterring grab a copy of CoreAVC.

Guys you dont need any great video cards to play HD content on your PC or Laptop. Just let the CPU do all of the encoding and it will play fine.

I built my HTPC for around £250 using this case

Just add a E series C2D with some RAM and a Hard Drive and you should be able to play anything you want.

Provided that your graphics card is able to run at the native resolution of the HD TV - usually either 1280x720, 1280x768 or 1920x1080 - a HD file will display at its true resolution (i.e. 720p or 1080p).

Also, like a standard def DVD can be upscaled to your monitor's resolution, a 720p file can be upscaled to 1080p. Just maximise the playback software window.

@Karym - DVI itself is perfectly capable of carrying a HDCP signal, it is dependent on the equipment at each end to implement/interperate it. However, HDCP should have been stripped out from downloaded BRD/HD-DVD sources. Even if they're not, its been proven that its not difficult to do so, e.g. Slysoft's AnyDVD can do this on the fly.

But I have found that VGA can give a washed out look to images, e.g. the red lightning bolt on the death proof poster appears pink on my HTPC.

@Curly - with the right codecs (e.g. CoreAVC as mentioned by Munkey) and with the media centre PC set to the TV's antive resolution it will play downloaded HD content fine. Whether thats a DivX 6.7 file or a ripped Blu-Ray or HD-DVD movie.

The optical drive however won't be able to read blu-ray or HD-DVD discs. As an upgrade route there are slot load HD optical drives out there but for the price I'd wait until for a true victor in the high def war...
