Working gun made with 3D printer

forget the guns!! whens someone gonna make a printable burger!!!

Amazing it made the news as it was a gun - and not for the material strength, precision, moving parts and advances in prototyping!

So next time I go through security at an Airport, best leave my printer at home and only take the laptop!

hasnt anyone thought about 'printing' a 3D printer, and selling it to cover their own costs?

lol

printer the gun is not difficult, being doing that type of prototyping for years at work on industrial 3D printers. As with all technology price has come down to a stage where its affordable for home users.

But tbh, you could make a serviceable gun from scrap metal and access to a basic workshop, hard part is the ammunition.

First part true, second part not. You assume ammunition in the normal sense ie bullets. A lump of scrap metal can fire projectiles just by having a reasonably straight hole drilled down its length. The power to eject a life-threatening projectile can be acquired during a quick visit to town. Yes, a bit vague but I'm not sure a firearms lesson would be appropriate here...

I think there is a project for a self-replicating printer :).

Our sister company has rapid prototyping machines and there was talk of us getting one, I imagine that there will be many comedy items taking shape.

Good point, saw no mention of the ammunition. Assume a standard calibre, maybe low mass type, but not much gun knowledge.

But if it is non standard, could be restricted that way. Problem is, once the idea is out, all sorts of possibilities follow, none good.

Conventional bullets would still be tricky to make (in this country at least) but yes you could make projectile firing weapon quite easily.

They are being made in nearly all the gun clubs up and down the country by the members reusing old cartridges and this has been happening for years, so there really is no problem at all.
But on the subject of the plastic gun, the real threat is the problem of detecting anyone carrying one through security check points such as at airports, conferences, political meetings or even sporting events.

My first thought as well, but they look bulky, and may show on body X ray scanners gradually being fitted at airports.
If they use conventional ammunition, I would expect that to show up with current metal detectors.
End result, both types would be needed, more expense and inconvenience for all.

General crime though, different matter. Mass produced, unlicensed, disposable guns, use "one off", then burn. No forensic evidence.

All because of the "printing prat". Hope he gets the bill !
