Microsoft Live Family Security.

Protecting your kids with Family Safety

Instead of blocking porn site, set a good list of sites that are allowed and everything else will be blocked. There is a pre-set list of sites set by some family safety group.

If your newphew wants to access a site, you will get an e-mail with the details and mom can approve or not.

more to the point what age is he.... please dont say hes over 20...

Sell the computer, it's the only way to totally stop it. :)

Dibbs, if the kid is above 12 then there is a good chance they will get around any protection you put on to stop them. You could set the parental guidance in internet options to high, and he wont be able to access any sites.

Which, of course you can still get round pretty easily !

If kids are determined to look at these sites then there is basically nothing that you can do to stop them short of denying them computer access except when supervised.

The so called "Nanny" programs just dont work for a large proportion of todays computer savvy kids who often have far more computer expertise than their parents. Chances are, if a parent is having to ask how to block sites etc then their kid already knows far more than they do !

OK, now you have me interested. How they get round the following simple restrictions
- set them up as user instead of admin so no installing extra apps
- password protect admin accounts and bios (so can't change boot order to boot from other device).
- Encrypt hard drive to stop it being accessed from alternate o/s
- lock down PC with parental controls, say net nanny or Live Family Safety

Well if the parent is asking how the hell do you do these, then what hope have they got of stopping the kid. Majority of parents wouldn't know how to do half that stuff.

You could place the PC in the living/dining room. There is less chance of him accessing it where other people will be.

You could use OpenDNS, just replace the IP address of your primary and secondary DNS servers with the OpenDNS IP's. Make a free openDNS account and you can control what websites are accessible and don't tell yout kids the account password or the router password so they can't change the DNS ip's back again.

Opendns has some very good web site filters and will protect your whole network. All you need to do is run a small program on your pc that lets opendns know your external IP address so it can block all traffic to your pc.

This is better than ANY software you could run on your pc because it blocks stuff BEFORE it even enters your router.

And it's all free. :)

Here are the categories, but you can also block individual web sites or domains.

Thanks to all that have responded, FYI he's a 10 year old kid, he ain't got a clue about computers or he would have deleted his browser history before leaving the lap top for his mum to find.

Some good pointers, downloaded netnanny and will give that a go, also @ Captain that looks pretty neat stuff that dns program so might also give that a try.

are you sure he's actually been meaning to access the porn or could it be pop-ups or a virus causing it?

not necessarily the kids fault

don't know but if i can block it all then good!

Can't you get around opendns just by using IP address ?

Can't you get around opendns just by using IP address ?

If you have a static IP then you can't get round it, even by using a proxy.

If you have a dynamic IP (like ADSL) you download and install the opendns updater so that when the PC or router changes the IP the updater program automatically send it to your opendns account and updates the settings to keep blocking. The updater can be run on any pc on your home network, if you have more than one, so that it cannot be disabled.

The updater runs in the backgound on your pc.

But because it directly filters your DNS access it's way better than any program like netnanny or anything you can install on your pc as that can be got round very easily.

I am confused here. If I enter YouPorn.com Lite (BETA) - Porn into my browser, my PC tries to resolve YouPorn.com Lite (BETA) - Porn to an ip adress. The request goes to opendns and it directs you to a page saying the the site is blocked.

However if I enter the http://80.80.80.80 then my PC does not need to a name resolution and goes directly to the site. The only think I can think of is opendns messes with proxy settings within my browser ?

Locking down an M$ OS, I presume your joking ????

The main problem though is the ease of sidestepping the constraints of any control program - these programs are extremly simplistic and very easy to get around - even a child could do it !

Im fact a lot of kids these days 'trade' methods of getting around school firewalls and those tend to be a lot harder than anything you'd find on a home PC.

I've even seen kids as young as 10 disabling a PC's internal HDD so they can boot from CD's or USB devices. This is especially easy when the PC is in their bedroom !

Then, of course, most kids have mobiles these days so 'porn' is often available to them via the phones browser.
