Right well i'll assume you fell into this thread looking for free software so i won't disappoint! (why else would you be in this section of the forum! (heh heh heh) Anyway I have decided to compile a nice list of opensource (free) software. All of this stuff is perfectly legal as it's all open source!

Internet browser
Firefox
Firefox, my favourite browser... it's great if you don't have it - get it.

Email reader
Thunderbird
Thunderbird is a bit like outlook express, if you've used outlook you'll feel at home with thunderbird. Thunderbird is more secure than outlook express too!

RSS client
RSS Owl
This one I've never used as I don't personally use RSS feeds, though it has good ratings so, give it a shot.

File sharing
Well everyone loves to fileshare right? well I do anyway so here's a bunch of filesharing apps you all might find useful.

Gnucleus
This one is similar to limewire except it has NO advertisements and is free forever.

Cabos
Cabos is also similar to limewire and is entirely free, plus it has a cool interface.

Azureus
Azureus is a bit-torrent client - completely free and it's cram packed with features. It's one of my favourite torrent clients.

UTorrent
Utorrent is a cool bittorrent client, it's small, takes a small amount of ram and it seems pretty fast, plus you can install custom skins for it so you can make it look cool.

Video players

VLC
VLC is a good media player, you won't need to install codecs to play movies and music with this as it just does it right out of the box.

Media Player Classic
Similar to VLC, basically has the same functions just a different look to it, check it out if you wish.

Word Processing
Open Office
This is a great free replacement for microsoft office, does everything that microsoft office does... except it's free.

Image Editing
GIMP
No this aint a GIMP, it's the "GNU IMAGE MANIPULATION PROGRAM" basically it's a free and very good photoshop clone.

Paint .net
Haven't tried this one, but it looks worth a use if your an image editing enthusiast.

CD-Burning
InfraRecorder
This is a nero burning rom clone, works well and looks familiar to nero.

Windows shell replacement
Blackbox for windows
Bored of that lunar theme on windows XP? looks too blue? well try this sucker out!

Messaging Program
Pidgin
Pidgin supports a plethora (thats means a whole bunch) of messaging clients, from msn to aim and icq plus a lot more.

Anti Virus
Clam antivirus for Windows
Clam anti virus for windows, this works fairly well and it's free so... yeah.

Well that wraps up this list for now, if anyone thinks i've missed anything that should be here just post it right into this here thread =)

under antivirus:
avg antivirus free edition
avg antispyware (30 day trial i know)
spybot search and destroy
hijackthis
ccleaner

zone alarm free edition

under messaging:

under dvd playing software:
K-Lite Mega Codec Ver 2.01

i dunno if these are free source, but i use these every day to clear crap off peoples pcs.

Opera, i have been using it for years, it's much faster and safer than IE, regularly updated and it's available for phones and ppc
