Hi everyone,

New to this forum, so just a quick hello. Have a bit of a question for you which I would like any suggestions on.

Just moved in to a new house and decided to get a new tv, preferably for my gaming room but the other half wants one above the fireplace in the front room fireplace to have more floor space. The 55" Samsung 8000 model to be more or less exact.

I have a few choices like chase the wires in the wall or faff about with removing the fireplace / drilling holes in the fireplace ( MDF ) to try to run the cables out of sight.

Another option which I considered, which would look the best internally was to drill through the outside wall and have 2 hdmi's, power and cat 5 on the outside wall of the house. Is this a realistic plan provided I do it properly?

I'm looking to have an AV Receiver and essentially drill 2 bloody great holes in the external walls to hide everything................. yes I could do it all internally but without getting the whole wall reskimmed again, I don't want to see the evidence :)

Has anyone done this or can think or advise of any pitfalls they encountered?

What kind of skirting do you have?

In the past where a friend did not want to fill or plaster again we pulled of his skirting and put the cables in a chase behind that.

We had to carefully drill the new screw holes and use some gripfill in places but it did the job :)

I also put my own wires behind coving when I re-did some of my house.

Going outside and coming back in is also a ok way to do it, just make sure you get the right cable for the job matey.

If you have thick carpet you could run cat5e cable along that slightly cutting a channel in the underlay... using hdmi over cat5 which will work nicely.

Good luck.

Mick

Cheers Mick, Decided in the end just to order the TV and drill holes and run them externally. JUst in need of some good conduit for the outside??

Opted for a samsung 55" f8000 in the end. Really wanted another plasma but couldnt find a shop that had a 55" panasonic that would actually post one out :(

Then went for a yamaha 375 with some tannoy hts101 speakers......... thought it was a good start as a first for a proper sound experience.

flat cables under the carpet for that though lol

Seen units with a piece of wood put behind it and painted the same colour as the wall to hide wires, maybe you could do something similar above fireplace
