Getting sunburnt in SoCal
Don't know if anyone knows but ...

I got one of those Technosonic tv's that woolies were selling like hotcakes. Good tele and its dual voltage and multisystem i.e. plays both pal and ntsc.

I took the tv to America and works fine on DVD player (via hdmi), Coolsat 5000 (satellite receiver via a/v) but not through tv aerial.

The coolsat only picks up one channel as its a old one but the cable aerial (motel one which has more channels) works on the analogue tv but not my lcd.
The cable is a coaxial cable so I got one of those connectors that you plug into the tv antenna slot on the tv.

Pic comes but its black and white, snowy and not aligned plus no sound. I have tried all the tuning auto and manual etc etc etc.

Anyone got any ideas? It could be I need to get a NTSC to PAL converter but since this being a multisystem tv, I thought it would pick up the signal fine. It certainly did with the coolsat.

Maybe there is a difference between connecting via a/v and tv antenna. Maybe if I get a coaxial to a/v connector.

is the tuneing system set correctly in the tuning menu?? its been a while since i have played with tvs but i remember having to set the sound system to I. maybe there might be a video system that needs setting???

I tried those. Didnt see any NTSC settings. Regions I saw was UK, EURO, FR and DK. The latter being the rest of the world but didnt mention states.

Dont understand though why it picks up the ntsc signal from the sat receiver but not the cable.

just looked at my tv and it has an option for "band" in there is an option for cable.

that last post wont help. the rf tuner must not support americas tuning system but the av in puts do. this is quiet common really i have had loads of tvs work on ntsc through scart but i have never had the oppertunity to try a ntdc rf signal or whatever it may be called.

thanks. I was thinking the same that perhaps the tv antenna doesnt support ntsc but a/v does. certainly working with coolsat.

I think I might buy a coaxial to a/v connector and see if that helps.

Thanks for your help.

NTSC is a video format...

hoever the aerail frequenceys differ from country to country so you may to be able to scan any terestial tv...

yea I thought at the very least I would get some terrestial but nope, didn't even get that.

The coaxial to rf connector costs about a quid in England. I had to buy one here and it cost me roughly 5 quid. Damn! It didnt even come to any use!!!

I don't think your TV has a tuner capable of receiving American broadcast TV mate. I'd check with the manufacturer. You'll may need to attach a TV tuner to it in the form of a US cable/sat box of some sort.

Just a guess though..

The TV I got is a rebadged Thompson selling as Technosonic. It is supposed to be multisystem so should handle ntsc.
I will probably not bother trying to connect to the tv antenna, instead use some sort of coaxial to a/v converter or a cable/sat box (possibly vhs video player)

I don't think it has anything to do with being an NTSC signal, pretty much everything these days plays PAL and NTSC.

Plug your cable feed into a tuner and then plug that into your TV and see if that works.

Finally got it going. I kept thinking a/v since it worked with the coolsat. Wasted 8 dollars on a connector which has absolutely no use. My old man still has his vhs player. Pity I gave all my disney original vhs tapes to charity before I left for USA else they would be handy right now :(

Anyways, aerial to vhs, then a/v cable from vhs to tele.

Lose a little on the quality due to vhs so I might get a coaxial to a/v connector but it works and far superior now to the old analogue.

thanks all
