Hi guys,

I've got a DVR system capable of up to D1.
At the moment i got some 400 or 420 TVL cameras and they arent very good.

What quality cameras will i need to be able to clearly see faces from around 10meters? or read number plates upto about 10/15 meters?

and wheres the cheapest to buy?

I've seen some on ebay but not too sure which to get.

EDIT

Will this be good?

720P 1MP HD Mini Bullet IR-CUT P2P Onvif CCTV Outdoor HOME IP Security Camera MO | eBay

or

1000TVL 720p BULLET METAL OUTDOOR CCTV CAMERA 1.3MP SONY SENSOR 3.6mm 20m IR | eBay

I'm going to have it wired. Already got the wiring in place with the current lot.

With your requirements, I'd go for ones with adjustable zoom lenses, That way you can adjust it to your exact requirements without having to guess. Even at that, PAL cameras have their limitations. Does your DVR support IP cameras?

it does mate yeah. supports IP camera.

When you say adjustable zoom, is that physically on the camera itself or is that software from the dvr side of things?

On the camera itself mate, often referred to as 'varifocal'. Basically optical zoom, far better that retro-zooming with software, you avoid a lot of the graininess.

What are the recording & play back quality?, will it play back like real life playback?, the higher the frames the better i believe.

Recording & playback are the job of the DVR, not the camera. A D1 DVR set to record at 30FPS will play back images indistinguishable from the live images recorded.

I See.

Also whats the best FPS on a DVR??, i am now looking at getting CCTV installed but there are loads of DVR's with different FPS....Arrgh!!, Confusion. :(

D1 is old hat now still used and very good but newer DVR models you should be looking at are 960H or IP HD ones for far better quality, you would also need some decent cameras to go with the upgrade. If you where to go with 960H get something like a Sony Effio-E/P camera
