Im into caravanning. I have a tourer that I have just upgraded from a 2 berth to a 4 berth. I have sited it for a second year at Balgair castle Fintry . We go up most weekends after work on a Friday returning late sunday. Planning to take the Older grandson up some weekends as well. Its our little house in the country lol.

Anyone else into caravanning?

Stayed in a caravan when I was a lad, was great back then :)

is it expensive to run mate?

The site fees are £1600 for the season Mick 1st march to 31st oct then about £100 for electric so not too bad if its well used lol. The biggest expense is the bloody club lol. Caravans them self can be very expensive to buy new ones are 15 to 20+ K but good second hand ones can be got a lot cheaper.
The biggest thing to be aware of when buying second hand is make sure its dry as water ingress is a Caravan killer.

@MH - naughty lol

I pretty much lived in one when working in the Midlands - loved it :)

Modern caravans are home from home. Central heating hot and cold running water shower toilet etc etc

I've got a big tourer but don't really get the chance to use it much.
The mrs is either working at the weekend or i'm playing with the band but i love it when we can get away.
You can get drunk at night and not worry about making a noise that disturbes the other hotel guests when you come home at night lol.

I've got a 6 berth Hobby that the kids love, i must say that modern vans are nothing like the old tin cans that i used to stay in when i was a kid mine even has Sky HD to keep the adults entertained when the kids are asleep.

Don't caravan any more, just can't afford it..........................but would be back into it in a flash if I could.
I have experience of touring and also being sited, so have some knowledge of both scenarios and would be more than happy to help out with any queries that anyone has.
I started out with an old Astral tourer that had the old gas mantle lighting, the water was cold only and was provided via a foot pump fitted in the floor and no toilet fitted ! although I soon had electric fitted for convenience, I then moved up to an Adria with toilet and electric fitted but still only cold water.
When I decided to use a seasonal pitch I moved up to a large Hobby 650 that had hot and cold water, toilet/shower, blow air heating and a Fixed Double bed, which then got upgraded to an almost new (under a year old) Hobby 720Ukfe which was a proper 7 berth with large fixed bunk beds, a Fixed King Size Bed, Toilet/Shower, central heating............it was a real home from home plus we also had a 3 metre wide awning that we kitted out with a wooden floor !
When the kids weren't so keen on coming we moved down to a slightly smaller Tabbert, which was termed as a "dry" caravan because it did not have sink or a toilet fitted (although it did have a four burner hob and oven fitted as standard) this tends to be the "standard" that the gypsies buy because they believe it is unhygienic to have a toilet where you will eat and sleep ! But I fitted a sink and water in the kitchen area and then converted one of the huge wardrobes that were fitted into an electric flushing toilet.
So as you can see that I was not afraid to pull things apart in the caravan or cut holes in the bodywork, although I always thoroughly planned and measured any project that I took on.
I did tow the Hobby 720 on the road a couple of times with the 4x4 that I had although at the time the size of the caravan made it illegal to tow with anything less than a 7.5 ton lorry and even when there was a VOSA check pulling in any vehicle towing something, I was just waved on by the police...............they must have just though "Gypsy...Forget It !" because at that time there were very few people who towed a Hobby that weren't of the travelling persuasion.

Last time I stayed in a caravan was when I was working on a farm whilst travelling through Australia. It smelt moldy and there were mouse droppings in the cupboards. Never again!!!

I've stayed in hotels and guesthouses like that in Britain !!
I think you will find things have moved on, this is the sort of luxury you can expect in new modern caravans ::

And in Scandanavia you could even have one of these, the Kabe Tower :: 1) Kabe Tower.jpg 2) Kabe Tower.jpg

Nice, not really what springs to mind when thinking of caravanning. But as with most things in life if you have the cash anything's achievable :)
