My son has just finished his first year of bricklaying course and is about to rebuild a wall in my back garden. It will need about 200 blocks to replace the ones which are there. and will be about 8 blocks tall, laid flat. It is holding back a top tier of the garden and I was going to dig it back a bit to get a good straight line for him to start with. What mix should he use to lay them with, I don't really know the difference between mortar and concrete so any help would be appreciated. Also any advice where best place to get the blocks from, a friend of mine has a trade card so should be able to get trade discount hopefully.

Thanks in advance

If your lad has finished one year would he not know what mix to use by now?

Try getting reclaimed brick or block might save some money.

You would think so, I think they must molly coddle them! The current blocks are hopeless, I'll have a look for reclaimed as you suggest. Thanks

4:1:1 for concrete? that wont hold anything mate, 3:4:1 at least

i assume you mean bricks

as for your wall being 8 high i would think it would have to be at least 3 thick, then youve got drainage to contend with also, either leave weep holes or run small plastic pipe through your wall

you will have to dig back and once your wall is finished you'll have to pour in fine gravel between the wall and the soil on the side its retaining
