Hi,

What's a good free encryption Windows software to use on a portable usb/hard drive? I think trucrypt is no longer being developed and looking for something similar.

Thanks

Just trying to read about it now. Guess its Bitlocker to go? Do you know if you can either just encrypt part of the USB drive rather than all of it?

AFAIK, it's the whole drive but you can partition into two (or more) drives to allow both encrypted and non-encrypted areas.

Does BitLocker require a TPM for all operations or can it function without?

Some don't like Bitlocker because it's closed-source. Realistically, most of us have little of interest to anyone. Anything I want to keep secret I usually just Zip with a password since it keeps the average muppet out - the CIA aint interested in me!

I'm just worried about loosing it or if it gets stolen. I use portable apps and some passwords are stored on them.

You'd be surprised how easy it is to get into some archives. I downloaded some Win32 software for a bit of test equipment I acquired. Encrypted archive but there were some files in the archive root and one was a EULA PDF for a freeware library the software used.

Downloaded said freeware library, and EULA, the comparison attack took about eight minutes and that was years ago :).

Hide the files and filenames :).

Be careful with encryption, if something happen you will never be able to restore anything from your disk

Just seen this post, you are probably sorted by now but if not i have been using usb secure for a little while which works on a vault type arrangement

you can put normal files on the usb no problem if you want access to the encrypted files you open the vault and all files saved in there are mounted on a virtual drive you can the use and when finished close and those files saved in the vault are then re-enrypted, unless you open the vault the files are not visible.

as somebody else said don't forget your password
