Hello all,
I need to send some info across the internet and I'd like to be as anonymous as possible. I know these days it's virtually impossible to secure absolute anonymity. But, any ideas on this?
My own very limited thinking suggests using TOR browser or a proxy of some sort to mask my IP address. However I know that is not fool-proof.
Alternatively, I was thinking of using an internet cafe, but they don't seem to exist anymore, at least where I live!
A friend suggested I use something like anonymouse on my laptop from a public wifi spot, but, I believe, that would still leave a trace of MAC? Can an individual using his/her own laptop in a wifi public spot be traced by their MAC? I'm not sure. I have read that MAC numbers can be spoofed. But that might be above my pay grade. I'm pretty low-tech!
Just to clarify, there's nothing sinister involved here. I'd just prefer to remain anonymous when I send the info.

mac spoofing can be done easy with programs . just click the device you want to spoof and new mac wanting used and its done

OK. That's what Ive read elsewhere, but it doesn't really help because I'm not sure what that means TBH! lol
Would I even need to change/'spoof' my MAC to remain anonymous? If using a public wifi hotspot and maybe something like anonymouse to enter the URL of the site?
Thanks!

mac address is the hardware address of the network card this never changes no matter what ip or network your connected to
so if for say you use a hacked modem on the pc and then use your legit one on the same pc without changing the hardwares mac address
then it could in theory be traced . but unless your doing something illegal then why would anyone trace this

oh and websites logs wont see the mac address it will just see the ip address
the mac address would need to be obtained for the isp

Go to McDonalds, have a meal, get free wifi. Your MAC is only held locally, usually only by the ARP cache, NAT and DHCP server. It will get flushed within 24 hours so you can pretty safely forget it!

You have to log into free wifi in most places (most of which seem to use BT Openzone) which means you must have created an account and you usage can be tracked by to you.

OP - Some idea of what you are doing would help us determine if you have anything to worry about.

my guess is something not as staright as it seems and op would be wise to not give any more info
or don't try it if your not 100% your safe

Is OP worried that the destination site knows where the data came from or that the transport to the destination site is the issue ?

Yes, you have to login having first registered using your disposable email address and payg mobile...

If your going to be doing this more than just a couple of times, why not buy a cheap dongle and buy a sim from a 99p store and topup with a voucher. (all cash transactions wearing a baseball cap and Groucho Marx glasses and mustache)

;)

I can't imagine any secrecy being important enough to merit eating at Macdonalds :puke:

If you want to stay safe, THROW THE FOOD AWAY!!

Oh yes, and the laptop if you want to be doubly sure... see here: http://www.digitalworldz.co.uk/tech-news-536/400114-meet-online-tracking-device.html#post2443334

Thanks, that makes sense. No, nothing illegal. But it sounds as though spoofing MAC address would make sense too, just to avoid potential tracing.

Hi there. More concerned that the destination site knows where the data has come from.

I was thinking that too. There are coffee shops locally that have wifi which, I think does not require any log-in. Just a case of connecting to their network and inputting the relevant password. But there would still be a trace off MAC number, I guess.

I don't understand how that would help me, dar1437!? I understand the changing sim in phone bit, but not the need for a dongle.
