What edition of Winoze are you running? I still have my first netbook which is about 5 ears old (an Aspire 1) and it still runs XP fine. But if you ant to spend £££, then an i5 ultrabook might be the way to go.

there goes one of your problems is that you're using x64 even though you have far less than 4gb ram (x86 usually maxes out at 4gb, well 3.5 normally after shared video memory) another issue is that the atom processors are usually optimised for windows starter edition, thats what it was designed for really, low end specs and processors, i use linux though cause it's awesome...

use windows 7 starter edition, or 8.1 core edition, or xp, or linux, just don't expect a full featured OS to work optimally on the netbook, alternately for a tiny performance boost click start and right click computer, then click advanced settings, then performance and choose the adjust for best performance button, then apply and ok, not ideal but should speed it up a little as it turns off all the bells and whistles you shouldn't really need (those options might be slightly wrong but not far out, done from memory and any errors are my own)

I thought 7/64 was a bit weighty for a netbook. What did it have originally?

a quick search on amazon shows it probably came installed with that, although it's far from optimal, to speed it up uninstall any unneeded and unnecessary programs and try the following programs if you can (although people may have different opinions on which software is better to use) install CCleaner and use it to clear your cache, uninstall unwanted programs and stop programs from starting up automatically, install MalwareBytes to find and remove any malware on your PC (if you want to make it premium buy a key, or go to youtube and search for "malwarebytes premium key" to get it free) also install a decent antivirus like Eset Smart Security (you can either buy premium after the trial or search Facebook for "Nod32 Username and Password" to find some free keys)

good luck, hopefully that'll help somewhat, you may be able to upgrade the RAM further, you could run the Crucial System Scanner Tool to see if and by how much your RAM can be upgraded on your PC, Laptop or Netbook

if your after something that works and is quick then the mac book air or mac book pro 13 would be far better.
I used to be a windows man, but after using a mac mini ive switched over to mac, they are expensive but they are a much better machine, my mac book pro scored 7.4 on the windows index to give you some idea what sort of power they have.

he shouldn't need a new laptop, although if he opts to buy one i wouldn't advise either a mac or a netbook, just choose whichever one you like and will suit your needs, bear in mint that most newer laptops can accept 16gb ram and have 4th generation intel haswell processors (5th gen broadwell processors coming end of year i think or early next year) the important thing is you choose whats right for you and not on anyones recommendation (unless you're willing to research the pro's and con's of each recommendation)

Good point Nara although it was the two posters before me who were saying what to buy, my posts beforehand were telling the OP how to sort out the issue, or attempt to at least

Get yourself a SSD to stick in it, it will turn your notebook into a ferrari. Not quite that fast lol but you will notice the differance.

I've got a HP 210 with Atom N570, 2GB of RAM and a samsung 840 evo SSD. The SSD made some difference definitely but not Fiesta to Ferrari type improvement.

As somebody else mentioned, the biggest speed up will be to get off Windows altogether. Mint is pretty feature reach and you can try it just booting off USB memory stick. Puppy Linux has lower hardware requirements and might be more suitable for netbooks.

osx made a massive improvement to the dell mini I have boosted battery life and speeded up boot time
but I found replaceing windows 7 with xp was about the same . also try getting it to hibernate instead of shutting down
will make it ready to use much quicker . remember the more ram you have the slower this process is
works best with 1 gb or under .
