I have a cardshare client that uses talk talk for his broadband. He is having to re-boot his router 4 times a night which is in effect making watching tv a joke. Talk talk say there is nothing wrong with his router and connection and wont do anything. He is also under contract for another 6 months so cant tell em to shove it either.

Is it possible for him to replace the router himself and would this have any effect on the problems he is having?

Replacing the router would be the first thing I would do, you can at least eliminate that then. If it not the router it will be the line.

do a continous ping to the router and see if you are getting dropouts. when you do get a dropout, do a tracert and see where the problem lies.

how do you do this m8?

Open up command prompt.
type:

ping ip.address.of.your.friend -t

let that run, whe you notice no returns, open another command prompt and type tracert ip.address.of.your.friend

I got his ip address from my dreambox server and tried pinging it but just get request timed out. Is there any settings he needs to change in his router or something?

Simple thing first mate: Is every phone in his house and his router connected to a micro filter before connected to the phone line?

If not, then that's the problem as the microfilter filters out "noise" in the line as the voice and data channels go through the same line.

If not, it could be dodgy wiring if he's done DIY and put extra telephone sockets in the house.

sorry for sounding thick. This is not really a strong point for me. How do I go about pinging a website or how do i find the ip addy of bbc.co.uk?

I am getting ping times varying between 14ms and 50 ms from the bbc (mostly 16-25ms). I have spoken to my client and he says he defo has everything microfiltered and that he had to buy extra ones to make sure they were. He also claims that none of the sockets were wird by himself and are original.

I am still getting request timed out if I ping his ip tho. Is there any other reason this could be?

Yeah, probably a firewall or something mate.
