Hey,

Just formated Lappy and have put win 7 on to see how it runs but now need to know what software you people recommend.

Will need to get everything from a Antivirus to Office and everything inbetween.

Would like all the latest versions too for when doing other computers.

Thanks

AV: I'm currently reccomending Microsoft Security Essentials. Though AVG, Avast and COMODO are popular free choices.

Office package: Open Office.

If you want a photo/image editing program take a look at Paint.NET and GIMP

Browser is a personal choice, but try Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Safari (listed alphabetically) to see if you prefer any to IE.

Do you want to stay legal or not ?

Utility wise,
7Zip
k-lite codecs
adobe reader, flash, etc

Apps,
MS Office or open office
nero9

new laptop arrived in post this morning for myself and realised been using the same software for last few years now.

avira antivirus
comodo firewall
diskeeper pro
advanced system care pro

how is 7zip superior to winrar?
going to give foxit a try.
any other recommendations on software particularly antivirus/firewall?
doesnt necessarily have to be the freebies.

7zip is open source thus free. I actually use 64-bit WinRAR but that is a company license.

I prefer Microsoft Security Essentials at the best free AV. Use Windows 7 built in firewall plus the PC is sitting behind the RRAS firewall.

Biggest security advise is logon using an account which is 'standard user' if possible or 'power user' if you have to. This will protect you from most of the nasties.

yeah but i just cba having to log in as admin every time i need to do stuff

You don't need to login as admin to admin stuff. Just right and select Run As Administrators. And aside from installs (which you want to control) for 99.99% of people there are very few day to day items that require admin access. And those that do generaly prompt for it.

Thanks oneman,
is there a way to open up the non administrator account on my computer by default, during startup as i do like to go straight to the desktop after switching the computer on.

Cheers,
