Hello

So my granny is pretty much knocking on the big doors, she has no savings etc etc and as a typical family we don't have to much money so does any one have any experience with funeral costs and help towards it from the government? hope it doesn't sound to callus but my grans kids all hate each other lol and never speak unless they are in situations like this :( so I again will be the one sat on the fence trying to keep peace and organising every thing.

Cheers.

Make sure there's a recent will - she may not have much but people will fight over stuff anyway.

Maybe the funeral costs can be settled from her estate? Funerals are only as expensive as you make them. My mum didn't want a big thing and specifically told me to do it small and low cost - remember her in other ways.

No estate and nothing to fight over thank fully unless of course she was a secret millionaire, but very unlikely :)

Im looking into this myself now fo my mum, lost my dad a couple of weeks ago

I think you can claim up to £1500 total costs and can still claim up to 3 months after the funeral

we didnt have a big funeral and I was surprised how much this all costs :(

Hi, sorry for your situation....I lost Mum 2 years ago and it cost a fortune (in my opinion anyway), all we had was the service, one car, cremation, and other costs (coffin, etc), no flowers, no frills, no grave as she wanted her ashes put into the sea where she lived.....£3,400 and the Government refused to help as my older brother was so well off, greedy b**tard wouldn't part with a penny as him and Mum didn't get on, so muggins got landed with the bill..

Firstly I wish you the best in your terrible situation..
Did your Nan or your grandad have any military service in any way.?
Could one or both have served during WWII or at any time.?
Please let me know..

sorry to hear of your loss m8 i cremated my mun on the n 7th june it cost £3100 and that was quite a basic funeral and i had about another £200 for sandwiches and a drink for everyone so not cheap

Sorry to hear about the situation. Did my grandmothers funeral a couple of years ago, basic cremation funeral and all in come to just under £3,500 after all paperwork, undertakers fee, cremation costs, flowers and other stuff.

I see somebody has already posted government links for help with costs.

Sorry to hear of the situation.

Some times tragedies have a way of uniting people. I wish you and your family all the best.

I don't know how far you are willing to go for a cheap funeral, but if like me, you believe in the put me in bin ideology, you could look into the funeral pyre option.

some info HERE

You may have to fight that this was her personal and religious wish.
This is something i'm considering as i don't think we should have to pay 1000's for a bad day out.

I don't mean to offend with this info, I know personally how much the government try to rip people, from the cradle to the grave.

Sorry for your loss.

My grandad was in the RAF during WW2, he died in 1977 though.

Hi if he was in receipt of any type of RAF pension that was commuted to your nan or a war widowers pension even if its a pittance it may/will entitle funeral expenses..Also as your granddad served and your nan is a war widower then she/you will be able to get financial help from Royal British legion.

Yeah she gets a small pension from but not sure what or where its from and is only a tiny amount paid each year.. I will mention this to my aunt who is the closest to her. btw the tough old bird is still hanging in there, breathing is shallow and she has had a couple of TIA's which is of course part and parcel of Alzheimer's but we have agreed no rhesus if/when it comes to it..

My prayers go out to you...but funeral expenses have really got out of hand lately (like so many things in life)...but it seems to be a growing business and there seems to be nothing we can do about it (like so many things in life)...
