Thread: Accu-Chek Aviva Test Strips/Lancets

Forum: General Chat

Does anyone know if you can get the Accu-Chek Aviva test strips and lancets free off the NHS? Or does any one know where you can get them cheap if they aren't free off the NHS? My dad (over 65 years old) has used up all his strips and lancets, these things are quite pricey for the amount you get in Boots, Superdrugs, ect...

I get mine on prescription, as I live in NI they're free
Get your dad to chat to the Diabetes specialist at his practice to ensure that he gets a regular supply

My dad gets them free too. He's type 1, if it makes any difference.

My dad is type 2 and is on tablets but lately his blood sugar reading has been in the high 20's.

I was told by my Diabetes Nurse that anything in Double figures is too high if you're on tablets, get him to see his Doctor / Diabetes Nurse asap, he needs his medication checked.

Should be under 10 at all times,
mind you that's in a perfect world

Common sense is the best advice, if his readings are above 10 consistently then bring him back to his diabetic day care centre

Thanks for your replies, my dad has been given insulin over the last week and another drug (can't pronounce or spell) to reduce his blood sugar level.

    Re: Accu-Chek Aviva Test Strips/Lancets

I originally did not know you could get the lancets and test strips on prescription until you guys mentioned it.

So I told my dad and he went to see the nurse at local health centre, asked for accu-chek aviva test strips for his blood sugar machine.
She checks her computer and said it's not listed as a NHS item , so she opens up her stock cupboard and gives my dad a FreeStyle Freedom Lite box (1 x machine, 1 x lancet pen, 10 x lancet needles & 10 x test strips).

Accu-Chek is the most common/popular blood sugar monitoring company out there, every chemist that I been to stock/sell their items, that why I bought their machine.

Has this ever happen to you and is it common practice to only get 10 lancet needles/test strips and not be provided with a prescription for more?

    Re: Accu-Chek Aviva Test Strips/Lancets

i`m using one touch ultra easy and get the test strips for free on prescription (i`m in wales)
don`t even see the nurse, just pop in and let them know i`m running low and it gets added to my repeat presc.

(not that i bother testing much as i know when my levels are too high)

    regards
    jase

He should be getting them on repeat prescription m8,

Might be worth talking to his doc and asking him to put them on the system for a repeat script
