Re: (car help)renault scenic white smoke

i just scrapped my 1998 Scenic for a similar problem. Lots of white smoke out of the back - head gasket had gone. By the time i arrived at the garage it was blue smoke too - definite sign of oil/water mixed - proper stuffed.

i got 50 scrap - but mine was old and knackered. ho hum.

    Now i aint a mechanic
But broken rings caused black smoke i thought
Well thats what happened to my first car
To check that remove spark plugs they will be black at spark end
Where the oil is seeping in to the piston
but that dont make sense to me but as i said i aint a mech

    Edit
Question is this car petrol or dev?
Oh and the above post sounds the most likely

Re: (car help)renault scenic white smoke

Ok white smoke is water(steam), in cold weather lots of cars can smoke, if it's been standing and or had short runs the exhaust could have lots of water in it, you need to give it a long run and see then.
Are you sure it was oil dripping? As water can also drip out the exhaust and can be black and look like oil, this also can be normal.
I'm not saying there isn't a problem just that it could be normal.
One thing I remember from collage(a long time ago) is that for every gallon of fuel you use, the engine producess a gallon of water.

    Me again
Now as said its water for sure then
As for the colour cooling systems rust( so look like oil)
If it was oil and water then they would separate
    Which is very noticeable
Now too the exhaust which always has water in it
You gonna have to find out if its been standing unused for a while
As said burning fuel creates water normally in exhaust
Bad cold weather like we had wouldnt have helped
Sorry but only way youll know for sure is take it on a very long run
    Boy racer springs to mind!!!!
Just watch out you dont end up with blue smoke or bye bye car

Worn bits and bobs inside the engine can cause it - could be serious but not always.

I'm not a mechanic, so ignore me.

But I recently had loads of smoke coming from my exhaust, it turned out to be too much oil.

Are you sure it was white and and not blue-ish?

Sort of correct but its not at the same time

Too much oil in the engine wil cause smoke - Serious as it can cause piston slap
Water (coolant) leaking into the engine will cause smoke - serious.

    However

White smoke is normal from condisation in the exhust burning off since you first started it in the morning -- Not serious

Start of the head gasket going (you can comfirm this by looking under the oil cap if there is a load of white gunk) -- Serious Get it to a garage asap

Oil burning emmits blue smoke -- usually piston rings going cause this serious ovbouslly

If it was warming up from sitting a white then dont worrie about it (Or its its a relly cold day as well)

If it looks like this :

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OV_QD_yFlo]YouTube - Civic smoking Blown head gasket[/ame]

    Then its defo head gasket

Blue smoke is oil if it looks like this get it to a shop :

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_1Pvk7H2lQ&feature=related[/ame]

    Black smoke is running rich

    Hope this helps

Black smoke : Running rich (Wont kill it stight away but get it check)

Blue smoke : Burning oil, Usually piston rings

White smoke : burning coolent, Usually headgasket
