Hi all, can I pick your collective mechanical brains on this one...

Driving out of my road tonight and car gearstick suddenly went all loose and then stuck in 2nd gear and ain't budging.

It's a Peugeot 106 and it had been driving lovely up until now - no obvious gear or clutch problems that I'd noticed.

Ain't safe to drive like this so have had to park it up at the roadside, cancel our night out and go back indoors :(

Haven't got a torch or my trolley jack with me either so it's too dark to investigate it properly tonight. Will look at it in the morning - anyone got any ideas what it might be and how to fix?

I know there's some good mechanical brains in here - would be grateful for some advice. Ta.

have u let it run out of gearbox oil??

have u noticed any little leaks?

if its seized it will be a split box from engine etc

have u checked to see if any of ur selectors have broken or just worn right down??

It's 99% possibility that your gear linkage has broken or just disconnected from 1 of the pivotal fixing points.
Most cases this is an easy fix so I'll keep my fingers crossed for you :)

To be honest i only got the car about a month ago from a local bodyshop/garage and coz they told me they'd just done all the filters and fluid top-ups i haven't checked the transmission oil myself - yeah i know i should!

But I havent noticed any leaks where i've been parking and gear changing has been fine up until now.

will take to seconds m8 put the link back on as most have said . just open the bonnet and look for this link at the back of the engine

Does sound like selctors .... If you need new ones there are 3.... Two short and one long .... short ons are about £14.00 incl and long ones about £19

can you get a Peugeot out of second gear any way ? sorry really bad joke, sounds like the linkage mate...it'll be cool...

cars been a nice little runner up to now so yeah i hope it's just the linkage and i can sort it tomorrow.

thanks so much for all the info everyone. i knew i'd get some good help from u guys - i'll be dishing out the reputation points later!

one more quick question - is it easier to work on fixing the gear linkage from the bonnet or by working underneath the car?

Out of intrest you didnt have The theme from friends playing on the radio at the time did you lol

It's gonna be a mucky under car job mate :(

yeah sadly as i'm discovering!

just went outside to check it out in daylight - i think i can feel the loose selection linkage but i can hardly see it from above.

ain't got my trolley jack here and ain't got wheels to go and fetch it so i'm gonna have to just take out the air filter housing bits and see if that will let me get at it better.

really didnt need this today :(

Sorted! Got to it from above in the end. Thanks all for the info.

1st time I'd got me gloves on and had a proper look inside this car. An ex girlfriend had an AX that I was always fixing and all these years later the Citroen/Peugeot engines and mechanics dont seem to have advanced much!

Anyway one good thing that's come out of all this is that I've worked out that my neighbour carries some kind of devilish car curse!

I don't the guy often BUT anytime I do see him in our residents car park and we have a bit of smalltalk about our cars - shortly afterwards something goes wrong with my car!

For example - saw him yesterday afternoon for the 1st time this year - and we talked for a bit about our cars, a few hours later the gear linkage goes!

Last time I saw him was a couple of months ago when I had a different car and same thing... saw him, we talked about our cars for a bit and a few days later the cambelt went!

Have learnt my lesson - from now on I'm keeping our conversations strictly about the weather and football!!!
