Hi guys, i purchased a new watch yesterday from the USA, but have received an email from the company today, asking for my telephone number for customs clearance purposes.

I have never been asked for this before, from any company i have purchased goods from the USA.

Is the law changed or anything, that they now require this Info

cheers

Tell them you don't own a phone, how can they prove otherwise?

It's quite common nowadays. I use Parcelforce International quite often to send things to Japan. They won't accept anything unless the telephone number of the recipient is included on the customs form.

so would you say or not, is it related to either paying VAT on imported goods.?

I had purchased from this company a few years back, and they never asked for it back then.

I think they marked my package as a gift tho, and it saved me quite abit

Its fairly usual these days just in case the courier needs to contact you if there is a problem with customs.

Customs do seem to be getting wise to a lot of the "fiddles" going on when importing goods. Its amazing how many items declared as £20 value are insured for several hundred ;)

A lot of companies will refuse to deal with you if you cant give them a valid contact number.

Whats the legality of selling an item for £1 with p&p of say £100 and then writing on the customs form its a present of value £1?

This happened to me recently when buying something from HK. The p&p was only £5 but i was wondering how far you could stretch this "loophole"?

If they do open it and the value has been misdeclared, they'll come down on you like a ton of bricks.
