Inherited a Cayenne chilli plant at work a while back. Its seems to be growing OK but only producing lots of flowers and only one poor lonesome chili.

Could it be because it has not been cross-fertilised with another chilli plant, I though that was only required if I plan on using the seeds from this plants chillies for next season.

It will need cross pollinating.

Either stick it outside on a nice sunny warm day and let the bugs do it, or get a soft brush and stroke the insides of the flowers (ohh er mrs!!! stamen stroking)

My mate and I at work have some chilli plants growing and were getting no where until we started cross pollinating. In 3-5 days I have 14 chillis growing.

The guys on the other side of the office have the same plant growing, I'll might go an pollinate with theirs then, lol

ive got jalepeno, thai , habernero growing at the moment, quite a few small ones and one giant jalepeno. may have to do a bit of cross polinating myself.

I did nearly buy a dorset naga chilli plant the other month but chickened out.

for those that dont know, in the rest of the world its known as the ghost chilli......

Worlds Hottest Chilli - The Dorset Naga

I had made a chutney using pure Nagas with a little salt, sugar and vinegar and reduced it down to a third of the starting volume. When I tried it a few days later with just the tiniest amount on the end of a spoon, my mouth erupted and it was a fantastic experience of the chilli burn, at this point I can honestly say that I was enjoying the pain. Then my enjoyment changed to agony as this tiny amount of chilli began to burn my stomach. I had never experienced that before and I was doubled up in agony for about an hour.

They had the chillies tested for heat level with two scoville testing laboratories in the US. The results were awesome and the heat level has been measured at 970,000 and 876,000 Scoville Heat Units at the laboratories in the USA, making this Naga a contender for the title of ‘hottest chilli in the world

After processing the whole unit has to be completely cleaned and sterilised before we can process any lesser chilli products. Our usual production line is 500-1000 units. Also the safetly equipment, masks, goggles, gloves and aprons which have to be worn need to be of a medical grade and can be used once only. The fumes and residues produced are immensely overpowering.

I have tried a piece of flesh (no seed) of the naga but not the dorest one. Freaking hot is all I can say. I can imagine with seeds would be even worse.

There is a episode of man vs food where he is in new york at a resturant called Brick Lane (lol) where they made a chicken phall with the ghost/naga chillie.

My mother bought a couple of Dorset Naga's at Abergavenny food festival last year for my brother. The seeds were used this year to grow their own plant and it's doing quite nicely. It's a little behind the Cayenne and Jalepeno but it's got quite a few fruits :)

thats right , they used essence of ghost / naga ....just the extracted oil methinks, was pretty funny when you see an asian dude cookin a curry in a kitchen dressed like he was either going into chernobyl or to a revival of 808 state!!! lol.

he sweat the moment he tasted it.

the dorset naga is apparently the hottest in the world, i think alot of its reputation and branding is now to do with michael michau (probably spelt wrong) its hugh fearnley whittingstalls chilli expert out of his series, an american guy.

One time I was cooking for a mate of mine who was pissing me off saying how hot he could take it. So I threw in a handfull of finger chillies. It was tear gas going off in the kitchen, lol. We had to evacuate the house. Worst thing, the guy still ate the curry.

Lol, check out Man Vs Food on the Good Food channel mate. He does a food challenge at the end which often involves eating something very very hot.
