Thread: Sick of Sky, so what's the best alternative??

Forum: European Satellite Chat

I'm totally sick of Sky taking 80 a month, so what is the best alternative, to watch an abundance of childrens tv, movies, sport, premier football without paying through the nose.?? cable is not an option as i've been there done that and i'm still paying for the t-shirt ..lol... it would need to be HD with a recordable feature (similar to sky +) motorised dish and have internet connection and a way to hide any porn for obvious reasons... i know there are a lot of set ups like card

Question Sick of Sky, so what's the best alternative??

i know there are a lot of set ups like card share and other stuff that i don't really understand...

i would just like to know what i would need for the best entry level system that will last a few years and an explanation of "cams" and what i will need to be up and running in time for the start of the footy season...

    thank you my fellow members.....

Re: Sick of Sky, so what's the best alternative??

I would suggest card sharing to be the way forward for you.
get a vu+ duo if you want to watch one channel and record another.
or a dm800 if you're content with recording and watching the same channel.

    ticks all of your boxes.
you should already have the dish for sly uk. so you'll be able to get everything sky offer with a decent cardsharing server.
when you're bored of watching local tellie you can think about purchasing a motorised setup. or if you've got a zone 2 dish sky dish you could attach a multi lnb arm onto it to get a couple more satellites.

cams are split into hardware cams and software cams, so your hardware cams is effectively another card which you can put into your box to get a few extra channels and software cams can help you open up full packages. but there are only a couple of european providers that can be opened up with them and i dont entirely know whats avaialable.

of course if its just sly cardsharing you're interested in, you won't need to worry about any of that. It seems prett complicated at first but its a piece of piss to set up and get going,

    Hope this helps,

Thanks for your reply Crazy Fool rep left..
i deffo want to broaden my horizons so the vu+ duo sounds the best choice..
i would like to fit a motorised dish, would the best position to fit this, north or south facing ??
and what sort of channel package could i expect to receive without the sly card shring option??

Re: Sick of Sky, so what's the best alternative??

ALL dishes for DTH (direct to home) TV viewing face south m8, then depending on what satellite you want, depends on what direction from south you go, sly is 28.2 degrees east of south. a fixed dish is only able to focus on a single satellite, you can however fit multiple lnbs to a single fixed dish to pick up satellites each side of the focus of the dish. a motorised dish will turn the whole dish to focus on different satellites

if you go for a twin tuner receiver like the duo, youre best option is to have 2 dishes, one fixed (possibly multisat) and one motorised, this way, you have the ability to record a channel off one satellite (the latest films from 7E for example) while the missus can carry on watching eastenders or some other junk like that at the same time

There is not much around unless you go for cardsharing.
