Can you use a Dbox2 to record with a network switch?

Hi

Getting things set up on my Dbox and finally making some headway. Got some network shares mounted finally (setting them up in XP isn`t that easy, if anyone wants some help let me know)

However, when I come to record, I can record a few seconds of video before the box gives up and says "The recording was aborted because the data could not be written fast enough" I also noticed that I can`t play MP3`s through the network share without them stuttering. I was wondering, is this because I`m using the box via a network switch and not through a crossover cable? Although I am able to use WingrabTV to watch and record over the network without a problem.

Any ideas anyone? If I could get this recording to work I`d feel like a kid on christmas day!

I've got 3 boxes set up on a network through a switch and a router and never had any problems. Never tried recording myself, but can't see any problems with it, the switch will be a lot faster than the box anyway.

I'm in the process of giving it a go myself, so i'll be watching this post for a bit of assistance myself ...

Managed a 31 meg recording but playing it back on the box just plays a black screen and playing it on the PC with Elecard its just full of garbage. Will keep trying and post results!

Still no luck... Got one recording to work, rest are filled with garbage, and still getting timeouts, any advice anyone?

thanks, maybe going down the server route would be the better option since I already know I can spool video to the PC using WingrabTV

Update! Well that worked great! However, I still get choppy performance playing mp3s or .ts off my network shares, I think thats the root of the problem. I can record without a problem now, just when I come to playback, everything gets choppy. Any ideas?

What image are you using? Some of the older images are crap for streaming/recording. I use the latest Sportster 1.6 with no problems.

im using the UK sportster image 1.6. I tried running winserver on another PC but now when I record the Dbox switches off the picture and just records a black screen :(( This is really frustrating I hope I can sort it I really really want to throw my VCR out.

Try using another ucode.. Mine did this, then I swopped ucodes to 0014 and it works perfectly!

Tried... same problem (recording black screen) I`m going to try reflashing the whole image to make sure its not a setting i`ve messed up.

Some progress at least, after reflashing and changing to ucode 0014 I can now record. I can`t play back though, still getting intermittent network errors. I think I will try a Nokia box instead of this Sagem one.

I get the "Data could not be written fast enough" problem on all the images if I have either of the "Write Synchronous" settings switched on.

Dbox -> Settings -> Recording ->Direct Recording Settings ->

Write Synchronous (O_SYNC) - OFF
Write Synchronous (FDATASYNC) - OFF

Save and activate etc etc...

That has always sorted the data write problem for me.

Thanks, I`ll give it a try. I can record using Winserver now, but I still can`t get them to play back smoothly :(

How are you playing them back ??
Are you opening the TS from the Movie Player or are you using VLC to stream back ? Personally I have had little problem with opening the raw TS over a mount and using that.

Out of interest, what spec is the machine that you're recording too / playing back from ? It might be that the machine itself cannot handle streaming the data at the speed required.

Machine is a 2ghz Celeron, 512mb ram, connected via gigabit network card to a Netgear 24 port gigabit switch. I can spool video across the network to another PC without a problem. I can also use VLC/Wingrab to make a recording on the PC side, I just cant get the damn box to play anything back properly. I have not yet figured out how to use VLC so i`ll give that a try.

Update: Got VLC installed and working, MPEGs are playing back through that with only minimal stuttering. I think I`ve got this box working as well as its ever going to, roll on my Nokia :)
