i bought a 51 plate astra just over 2 weeks ago never went anywhere far just work and back decided to go for a run last weekend after about 40 miles the engine managagement light came on i carried on but kept an eye on it and noticed my temperature gauge was not moving only went up if i was still in traffic or at lights etc then when car was moving it went to zero i stopped at my destination and left car to cool for a few hours (although it wasnt overheating) when i started car up engine management light had gone off but all the way home tempeature gauge still not moving i went back to garage i got car from they are not interested so i changed engine coolant temperature sensor still the same so i argued with garage it must have some warranty so they agreed and had thermostat changed but didnt change cambelt it still didnt fix problem so they decided to change water pump but still put old cambelt back on anyway car still has same problem but now engine management light back on any ideas what it could be

thanx for looking

are the fans kicking in straight away when you start the car ?

Could be the EGR valve mate a common problem on these cars. Not related to the temp though but if its not overheating i would worry about the egr ( exhaust gas recycling valve ) first and then the temp problem

no but if i sit stationairy and let the car tick over temperature gauge goes up and fans kick in

where would you reccomend i take it charlie as i live in corby too

sounds like temp transmitter wiring shorted to earth
ANT CHANCE OF AN ENGINE CODE ?
see how wiring is set up

if the stat was faulty and not closing water would keep flowing around giving no chance to heat up,when stopped it would move a little and when moving drop down again, maybe use a good fuel cleaner in petrol tank as carbon does effect the egr valve, also check you are using the correct grade of oil as newer
one use low ash oil which reduces carbon.

You need the code that the engine management is giving.

Problem is you need a reader to get it. If none of your mates have one, you can get a cheap one from ebay, you need an ELM 327 interface, it connects to your car, and a pc. Laptop is best, as you can take the laptop to the car. other wise you might need a very long usb cable, with a few repeaters. You can also get dedicated ones from places like Halfords.

Other problem is, I was fixing a 53 plate last week, and for some reason, my interface would not work with the car. It said that it could not read the protocol, which could mean, that the astras are not fully OBD compliant.

You would then need to get to a stealer to get the code, I believe about £45.

If you can get the code, I can tell you what it means. which will more or less tell you the fault.

is this car an 8 valve ?
if so engine code should be on your v5 (reg document)
these 8 valve astra g cars are known for the cooling system and the stat if not fitted causes no end of problems
try getting someone to have a look over it easier than trying to google the fault
also i think your car should be eobd compliant but some fail on pin 7 for some reason
maybe someone here is close and has a decent scanner vaux com or op com ?

the engine code matters as it could be either 8 valve or 16 valve
due to some having temp transmitter in the head and cooling fan switch in the radiator sone are switched via the ecu
and have a coolant control module in the os inner wing
try find some details then i can maybe provide a few pointers
it sounds like an x16szr 8v unit but have a look
meanwhile heres somic to check for codes hope it helps

thanx for all your replies i booked it into a local garage on the way i popped into another garage to put some petrol in car and when i started it up light has gone out took it to local garage but he said not worth reading needs the fault light on so i no futher forward as i just bought car over 2 weeks ago i aint got v5 document but i can say car is 8 valve

Keep taking it back to the place you bought it until they fix it.

even if the fault light isnt on its worth reading ?

historic codes will be logged too
follow the link i just posted and look up astra 1.6szr cooling all will be revealed

just went out to try the wire trick took off cover and can see straight away i have no number 6 pin so i done the pedal trick and it shows 0400 Exhaust gas circulation valve

thanx for looking

0400 is egr valve mate there a real pain in the arse on all the range of vauxhalls that use them.

they get full of carbon deposit and coke up to the point where the valve cannot be moved sometimes knackerring the cellanoid ( depending if its air vaccum or electric activated) i know you can clean them mate and get some more life out of them depends on your diy skill. it needs taking off the engine and soaking in petrol or brake cleaner then a toothbrush on it to clean it thouroughly. when you get it sorted you will notice better engine performance and better mpg.

personally i would have it back to where you got it from and make them sort it, if it was a car trade place they MUST give warranty if its a private sale then goodluck getting anything) garages by law have to give warranty not sure how much but some one will know here im sure .

If the egr valve is past cleaning and need replaceing dont get a second hand one as you will be back at the start quite quickly, new ones are expensive but not ridiculous. hope that helps mate
good luck.

Exhaust gas REcirculation valve (EGR ) might help if you need one...

it that just the management light fault or could that be the temperature gauge fault too

you can blank off the EGR valve and get the ECU remapped.

common fault on the Astra

my mate went through 5 units and had the car for 4 yrs lol, blanking sounds cheaper .

will ata guess need the egr map redoing in the ecu ,if not the cel light will be on again saying the egr in knackered
