Thought I should pass this info on.

My car failed an MOT due to a fuel leak in the tank at the pump seal. A local dealer had done a job on the car 4 years ago, on the part that leaked.

After a little research and a fair bit of effort I discovered that under English law we are covered by the Supply of Goods and Services Act (as amended) for a period of 6 years, 4 years in Scotland, 2 years anywhere else in the ECC, from when a repair was carried out on a product. Provided you can prove that the problem was down to the repairer then you can make a claim through the small claims court.

The dealer in question did nothing but lie and lie again in an effort to get out of the claim. They were found out when they hung themselves on a piece of evidence they had not even considered, and it was in their own files. Notwithstanding that it had been proven that they had indeed made a botch of the repair.

Long story short and 2 months down the line from the MOT failure they have just forked out the best part of £2k + costs and were not allowed, at my insistence, to do the repair themselves. They really did not like that but the judge pointed out that how could they be trusted given their performance in the first place and their attempts at gaining a false judgement in their favour was the last straw.

Got the car back this morning. Yahoo
