Hide My Ass

good explanation m8 but it does also change your ip address as often as you like just right click on the task bar icon and change ip

It does change your IP address but that is nothing to do with virgin bandwidth shaping which was the question asked. Virgin do protocol analysis (deep packet inspection) and can tell which packets are usenet traffic. VPN gets around this by encrypting the data thus DPI cannot tell its usenet traffic.

As for Hide my ass, there is a review here indicating that none of their VPN proxies exceed 3MB/s which is what I expected. UK ones manage a paltry 1.5MB/s. Fine for streaming video, general web browsing and the odd bit of downloading but its won't max out a 50mb connection.

Also you don't need VPN to view TV from another country, a standard unencrypted proxy will work just fine.

Finally, as for usenet sites not working, it possible that your usenet provider has blocked the IP ranges used by HMA, Not likely but possible. Possibly more likely is HMA has blocked usenet protocol as they are worried about their bandwidth getting hammered.

If you want to bypass ISP DPI, you can try SSL which most of the larger usenet providers (giganews, astraweb, etc) offer for free and changing away from the default port of 119, however that this does not always work. The only sure way is to use a VPN proxy service but be aware that these are generally speed capped.

this is great if it allows you bypass vm capped dl limits...might try the trial..

The IP address used for the connection to your ISP does NOT change. It has ZERO effect on traffic shaping.

What does change is the address that your destination server sees for traffic that is passing through the VPN tunnel. So services like Hulu will think you are in the US. Where is also helps if your IP address gets banned from a forum but then again most forums don't allow connections from proxies.

right so it does not do what they claim then but it did stop me connecting to the internet today does this forum allow connections through proxies because i have been connected to this forum all day on the day i originally posted about it and google even offered to translate the page when i was using a sever in Tallin

Still throttling my bandwidth after changing IP address, so no good for me as well. :-(

they reckon they have thousands of happy customers so please everyone on here that is unhappy contact them like me and ask for a refund they even count uploads as part of your 10gb traffic and this morning i could even connect to the internet or email with the vpn on

Have also emailed them asking for a refund. So you can only download or upload 10 gig a day???

edogg - I thought altbinz and grabbit were downloading programs, they need to connect to a usenet server somewhere. I presume you are using virginmedia's server. Well in that case of course the connection won't work because the virginmedia usenet server will see the connection coming from outside the virginmedia network and block the connection. The VPN proxy will only work if you connect to a public usenet server like giganews or astraweb.

It could be the same issue with e-mail that virgin is blocking connection because it thinks your PC is outside of the network. Maybe there is a setting in their client software to not tunnel all traffic ?

no m8 the limit is total usage!! upload and download. there is no limit on download or upload. But to qualify for a refund you must have used less than 10gb when you apply for it i have gone through my creditcard for a refund but they were not very hopefull that i woud get the money back

thank you very much for clearing that up I never thought of that and neither has their technical help you are the very helpfull I just hope I can convince my credit card company that I was miss sold the service as it does not do what they claim

Very likely you need to set up routes to specific destinations using the route command. If you set things up properly then these 'extra' routes wont be routed through the vpn and should work normally as they will appear to be part of the VM network (ie your normal VM IP address).

If you use a proper vpn router you could also set up protocol based routing so you could, for instance, choose to not route all email protocols through the vpn.

Generally, its much easier to use non of VM's services - get yourself an alternative email/newsgroup supplier and all will be well.

To use a VPN well, you really do need to take the time to learn how to use it. They will do a lot of stuff straight off but if you want to do anything odd (like using VM's services from an IP outside of their network) then you need to do a bit of studying !

nb, if you have the correct settings for VM email using ssl etc (ports 465/995 for ssl) then it should be usable from any connection. Afaik, its only non ssl connections that are refused from non VM ip's

thank you for your input nozzer this HMA pro vpn does not have the controls you mention there is a secure ip bind BETA which lets you bind only selected programs so they will only work when connected to the vpn but i didn't have this set I think the problem with altbinz/grabbit is as said by oneman
I Have been misled by them into thinking this vpn would enable me to bypass traffic shaping/capping

edogg

Traffic shaping you might bypass but VM now seem to be 'shaping' some traffic they cant identify (ie encrypted traffic) as well as various default VPN ports. In fact some default ports are now diabolically slow !

'Capping', you wont get around with a VPN. This is data volume specific so using a VPN has absolutely no effect. You still send/receive the same volume of data regardless of whether its through the VPN or not. In fact, you actually send slightly more data as the encryption and VPN operation involves an overhead !

thanks again m8 this is giving me all the info i need for my argument for a refund even though they are saying because my usage has exceeded their 10gb in the terms and conditions for a refund at the moment the head of the welcome dept "JOVAN" is trying to connect altbinz to the news group as mentioned you never now he might be able to do it but with your above info it wont do me any good as regards shapping/capping

much appreciated
