A mate has a 3D samsung TV hooked up to a HTPC with a ATI 5450 video card. He is trying to play back SBS 3D MKV from the PC. At the moment he is using XBMC, starts playback and selects SBS 3D on the TV. TV is merging the picture for 3D but the effect is not very good, like the two images are not in sync.

Wondering if the issue is with XBMC, is there any apps specifically designed for 3D MKV playback ?

you could try the latest version of powerdvd, i know it supports 3d formats, think it's ultra or mega.

I'm sure you will be able to source a copy.

Want to try and avoid powerdvd is possible, just found it way to bloated and it seems to want to pull down 100mb updates all the time.

could be the film he is trying to play , some 2d-3d conversion are rubbish , and some of the 3d films aint even been shot in 3d , and could also depend on the firmware on his tv as samsung have messed up the 3d in the newer firmwares !!!

I just use the samsung dlna software to play sbs .mkv files over the network, never crossed my mind to try and send it from a video card.

A lot of the 3d content is crap anyway though.

My tv is on the network a nicer solution for me than having to have a HTPC dedicated to media.

as the pic is presented in side by side all the 3d conversion is being handled by the TV so in theory it wouldent matter how it gets to the screen, as long as it gets there

on another note if he is playing directly from the pc as you said then the best player for this would be stereoscopic player

I have had amazing luck with the 5450 and DALForceStereo Hack and using TRI-Def software to play them, the newest version uses AMD HD3D driver
