For some reason my phone has stopped playing a text message notification sound. I have tried about everything there is from settings sound and from settings within messaging but I can't get it to work.

I did notice the Vol up/down button on the side of the phone, if I press say Vol up and the slider bar appears onscreen that , if I press on the cog/settings and I slide the VOL on any of the four sliders that appear no sounds can be heard , it should raise and lower the VOL but it doesn't. All's that happens is the phone vibrates when I turn the ringtone down to nothing.
Anyone know how to fix this ?

Have a read below also Pal

To fix this problem, drag your finger from top to bottom on the screen to reveal toggling option for features like drive mode, wifi, notification ,etc..toggle notification on by touching the icon making sure it is lit green.enjoy the SMS sound again !!!
Good luck

Make sure your phone is not in the silent mode, check this by going to Settings> Sound> Ensure the Silent mode is turned off.
Make sure you have ticked the Notification option under Messaging app settings.
Make sure you have ticked the Email Notification option under your Email account settings.
Make sure you have adjusted the volume so you can hear the tone of an incoming message or email, check this by going to Settings> Sound> Volume> adjust the Notifications volume bar to the right to increase of the volume.
Check whether you have enabled blocking mode on your phone, check this by going to Settings> Blocking Mode> (if blocking mode is enabled) then make sure the Disable notifications option is not checked .

If your Samsung Galaxy SIII running with the Android Jelly Bean, make sure you have checked Show Notifications in Messaging app and Email app. Do this thing by going to Settings> Application Manager> Go to the app (Messaging and email)> tick the box next to Show Notifications.

you could always do a factory reset just make sure you backup all contacts and pictures first, this will also speed the phone up as no cr@p will be left on there.

there is no notification from the top drag down , and all the settings were set correct , I went through them with a fine tooth comb. I found out later it's a known glitch and it happens with a fair few s3's and the only way to get the sound back is a factory reset which I did and it solved it. Just a pain in the harse sorting out the phone after i'd done it.
