Samsung has sent out event invites for the launch of its Galaxy S4 smartphone on 14 March in a bid to steal the limelight from its rivals at the Mobile World Congress.

The launch event will take place in New York and as you can see from the image above, all but confirms the newest device in its flagship range will be called the Galaxy S4.

Samsung will be hoping the new devices helps cement its position as one of the top two in the smartphone market as it vies with Apple for top spot.

The firm's Galaxy S3 devices has been an integral part of its success over the past 12 months, racking up millions of sales thanks to a host of innovative features.

The S4 will face tougher competition this time around as the likes of Nokia with its Lumia range and other Android phones like the Sony Xperia Z are now available with high-end specs.

Nevertheless, Samsung is likely to have plenty of new innovations included in its devices and will be able to guarantee huge coverage and interest in the new device.

The timing of the invitation is designed to draw attention away from rivals such as Nokia and Huawei, which are currently unveiling new devices at the Barcelona trade show MWC.

Samsung isn't the only firm to try and bypass the need for MWC, though, with HTC already unveiling its top-range One smartphone and Apple has historically always shunned the event too.

I'm considering a new phone so might pick this up if its any good, hopefully it'll be 4G as well as I usually only replace my phone every few years

great news, my contract is due next week, so might just hold off

I think I did read somewhere they won't be shipping for another 6 to 8 weeks, not that long really compared to the fiasco that google made of the N4 launch

My June renewal will be getting one of these ,wife wants a Galaxy S3 mini but I have the feeling she will be out of luck :)

Little disappointing, for me anyway. I was hoping for a new design not just a beefed up S3. I suppose its made my choice easier and I'll get the ONE

Na, I know what you're say but under the bonnet is amazing. Played with the ONE last week and my preference is HTC, however I think the S4 is the best out the lot. Am using the Xperia Z at the moment testing it for the week and i will say its brillient but just to plain for me, just feels like using the T, in fact any Xperia due to the os over the top of android.

HTC have by far the better os (sense). Samsung's Touch wizz is like a child went mental with some crayons.

Think the S4 now having the translate S option, the other 8 senses, the weather adapter also the eye contact one. Excellent innovation in hardware, software but has turned it in to a 1 look show pony.

1 thing for sure, I wont be getting the 64GB, 16 all day long, they will price it the same as the iP5 £500 16, £600 32, £700 64GB. I'll just buy a £35 SD 64GB from FleeBay.

As soon as i get any pricing and a offical release date I'll post here

To be honest I probably wouldn't use half the new features,I'd have a play but that's it. It basically comes down to looks, and the ONE wins this time around for me

can't argue with you on that. I think its a nice looking phone but despite the look of the S4, All the S series look big. Take the HTC ONE X, its about 1mm bigger than the ONE S. The Xperia T, looks half the sise of the S3. The Z looks more like a 4.7" than a 5, the ONE is about the same size in hand.

It like anything, once the novalty wares off, you dont use most of the programs. I think that's where the Z will steal a march, simplistic and it really is water prove. had it in a 4ft fish tank testing it.

ANYWAY THE htc ONE has been put bnack from tomorrow release to the 29th (good friday) I in no way would say anyone is making a mistake getting it over the S4

well its due out on all networks around the 26th April. UK costing is still up in the air however they have said in the US the 16gb is $589 about £390 but we know for a fact we won't pay that.

On a 2 year contract av price £37 p/m £99 upfront

waiting for a demo to come in but have been told its the same size as the S3 but lighter and thinner than the S3.

hearing good things but still think the HTC one with the new OS to challange it, even tho its only got a 4.7" screen and a 4MP camera (superpixel). The one is still bigger than the S4 so i still think the S4 is the phone to beat.

The S4 will be a beast of a phone, but why Samsung insist on those nasty plastic polycarbonate rear covers is beyond me..makes the phone feel plasticy and cheap. I'll hold on to my Nexus 4 for at least another year the S4 should have dropped to 300 quid by then,..may even see a Nexus 5 by then, Android 5 will defintley be out as well Key Lime Pie..

I still prefer iPhone 4 which has almost all that a normal business or traveller needs, although I am looking forward to good deals with S4 and see if it really beats iPhone's

Lola iPhone 4 ??? That's been dead since the galaxy S2 killed it... Not even worth taking about iPhone in the same sentence as s3 or s4...

Now now, let's not get into an os slaggin match!!!

Just seen sim free price of the s4, £589 @ amazon!!! Not sure I want it that much, think I'll keep my s3 for a while!!!
:Bounce:

I agree keep your S3 for another year, by then maybe the Nexus 5 will be out or at least the S4 will have dropped in price. Personally I think the build quality and design on the HTC one looks better than the S4 .

I too like the HTC, just not sure about going back to sense!!! Think I'll stick with the s3 til at least June, give it chance to drop a touch. Maybe the Google X phone maybe confirmed by then!!

I've just bought the one and sense 5 is nothing like what it was like when I had a one x. This is an amazing phone and I'm normally swapping phones every few months but this could well be a keeper
