Right i recently acquired a 40 gig 2.5 inch drive
So i thought let me turn this into an external drive. So on fleabay i bought a cheap case. However this is where my problem begins which i need some guidance/answers to. I have fitted the drive to the case and pluged it into my USB connector in my PC. My PC recognises it etc BUT it seems to pick it up as a "local drive" and not a "removable drive".
This is a big problem because it wont pick it up unless i disconnect one of my drives (all my drives are being utilised primary and secondary).
My question is does anyone know of a decent case (cheap preferably) which will show the external drive as a "removable drive" and not "local drive". Obviously this isnt a problem if I remove one of my drives, but as stated before all my drive connections are used up.
Another reason i need it to show/act like a "removable drive" is so that i can use it in my car stereo

when u plug the drive in what letter does the system give it ? i am assuming it gives a letter that is already assinged to one of you exsisting drives.
if this is the case, remove your drive so the usb one works, then go into disk managment and change the drive letter to x or y then shut down and re-instert your normal drive. reboot the external usb should now stay at x or y and other drivers should work too.
removable storage is normally tapes, cd, dvd, zip drives etc in the info i have it talks about disks as well but doesnt tell u if they have to be specific types of drives, like scsi, ide, usb etc.
i have 2 extenal caddies both work ok both x: drives and neither interfer with the other drives in the machines

1st November 2006, 14:50 #3 when i plug it in it assigns the next available letter......However it wont work if i have all my internal drives working (4 in total), when i go into disk management it wont find it.
If i disconnect one of the internal ones then it will pick it up.
mmmmm i'm wondering if its something to do with the jumper setiing on the external disc.....???

jumper settings shouldnt make difference.
when disconnect internal drive and it works can u change drive letter to something higher up the alphabet ? to an unused letter.
xp sometimes does the same with my memory stick on customers machines if they have loads of network drives mapped

Right click my computer and click manage.
Then goto disk management.
Recognise the 40Gb drive and reaasign drive letter to a known Free letter.
