    XDSL - Linux OS Live/Boot CD for Xbox Console

    X-DSL is a small (currently about 40mb) but fully functional Linux distribution for the XBOX, based on Damn Small Linux.

    X-DSL can be run as a live CD on a modded Xbox or installed to the Xbox hard drive.

    Pop the XDSL CD you've just made into your Xbox and allow it to boot. You should be presented a choice of video modes (640x480, 800x600, 480p, 720p). 480p and 720p require your Xbox to be connected with component cables to a HDTV. Once you have choosen a video mode XDSL will boot and you'll automatically be logged into X as the user 'dsl'.

    You can interact with XDSL by using a Xbox controller to move the mouse pointer. To launch programs right click on the desktop (B on the controller) to bring up the fluxbox menu. If you need to enter any text a virtual keyboard is available from the fluxbox menu under Apps. Alternatively you can use a USB Keyboard/Mouse with a USB adapter.

    X-DSL has fluxbox based desktop, with applications for a number of common tasks including

    * Mozilla Firefox web browser
    * AxY GTK+ graphical FTP Client
    * Sylpheed graphical email client
    * Naim console based AIM, ICQ, IRC
    * VNC and Remote Desktop clients
    * FLWriter word processor
    * Siag spreadsheet
    * Graphics editing and viewing using Xpaint and xzgv
    * Viewers for PDF, Word and Postscript files
    * emelFM file manager
    * XMMS audio player
    * Monkey web server
    * FTP server
    * SSH client/server

    X-DSL can be customised using myDSL extensions with over 200 extensions currently available from the Damn Small Linux repository.

    This is available on the autoinstaller deluxe latest version. Ive installed it and played around with it.

    Its a bit tricky using it without a keyboard, but its easy to install and simple to use. Nice bit of fun.

    It's strange that you never got it up and running, it works on my Samsung drive Xbox using a Mitsubishi CDRW.

    Just stuck the CD in booted up ..... get a menu with 3 symbols on the bottom of the screen just use the controller to select the DVD icon and I set my screen resolution to 640x480 and it booted up fine.

    The core components of the XBox do not differ from box to box, so I don't know why it didn't work for you.

    Did you select the HDTV settings ie 480 and 720i by mistake ?

    You can pick up a USB adaptor from Fleabay for about £3/4 and I use my keyboard and mouse with the browser - just make sure you have the Xbox controller and the other devices in the slots when booting up.

    Also you can setup a printer .......... but that's a bit of overkill I think !!

    Web browsing good enough for me - just for checking emails
