How long for the internal drive hardware?

Hello everyone, I am wondering when we are going to see the hardware for sale to allow the introduction of an internal 2.5 inch hard drive into the Dbox2?

There was talk of it some weeks, if not months, ago and yet still there is no signs of it becoming available I know there is the option of the external NAS drive but I really wanted to have a go with an internal one.

I know it must be all sorted as Liam posted pictures of his own setup, but can any of you guys who are connected with the development of this, or are in direct connection with those who are, give us some sort of time frame for its possible availability?

Any sensible info will be much appreciated, Chris

Well I cheated with the way that I done mine but it was also very difficult to pull the right voltages from the different places on the board. If you take it from the wrong place then theres a possibility of screwing up the video output and you'll get nothing from the scarts whatsoever.

The other ways you can do it whilst you are waiting for an internal solution, are:

    1. Dismantle a NAS enclosure and mount the circuitry inside the DBOX.
Mount the HDD also inside it, and then join the two together. Then have an
ethernet wire coming out of the hole where the modem used to be, and
connect it to a router etc, just like you already have done with the main
    DBOX ethernet port.

    2. As above, but run a SHORT ethernet cable (crossover) out of the modem
hole and then straight in to the DBOX ethernet port. This means that the
drive is directly connected to the DBOX. Note that you will have to disconnect
the drive before you can FTP in to the box etc

Why not try experimenting with the SD/MMC cards until the real internal HDD solution comes out?! I tried it ages ago with just a basic Nokia 32MB MMC and it worked. I might consider knocking up a few boards for SD/MMC if people were willing to pay the cost of materials (solder, components, etc) plus postage.

Would adding a HDD inside the Dbox not cause an overheating issue??

Its one of my main concerns yeah.
Although if the guys at tuxbox have fully tested this internal solution they're working on then I guess it must be fine, or they would at least make recommendations as to what sort of cooling to introduce.

Just as a quick answer to the piece of string question ..... twice the length from one end to the middle is the usual length.

Would I be right in assuming the interface will be PATA rather than SATA ?

The NAS solution seems favourable to me. If you have a show stored on your dbox and you wish to transfer it to your pc you will have to do it at 10mbit!

Well, well, well. Not the response I was hoping for

@ Speedy...Thanks for your input anyway. It looks like I am going to have to have a go with the external drives for the time being. Is there a particular model that you would recommend that can accomodate both standard 40 way ide as well as the newer sata drives? I don't need a drive yet as I have an old 120gb ide that I can utilise, so just a bare housing would do fine. If they are available from ebay then please just post URL.

Also, are these external units quiet enough to not be intrusive and are they intelligent enough to spin down when not being accessed, or is that part of your trick coding

    Thanks in advance, Chris.
