My iPhone 3GS is jail broken and running 4.3.3 firmware. I would like to use it to stream to my TV but I can't install skygo due to the old firmware. Is there an 'easy' way to upgrade it to 5.1 or something so that skygo will work on it? If that is possible would I be able to stream to an Apple TV and run my XBMC through it?

Sorry if these are dumb questions but you don't know what you don't know!

Thanks

Have you got any SHSH blobs saved? For 5.x ?
Open cydia , it will tell you on the homepage what blobs are saved for you (if any)
If you do then it would be possible to update to 5.x and still jailbreak it .

@Kryton
yes if I go to the TSS Center from cydia it shows 5.1 and 5.1.1. it did use to show which iOS were saved at the top of the screen on the cydia homepage didn't it? I'm assuming the ones above are saved somewhere. Would it be easy to get to 5.1.1 and the keep the jailbreak so that I could then run the skygo app?

If they show in the TSS centre then they are saved.

This tutorial is to downgrade from 6.x but its the same procedure if you want to update to 5.x
Downgrade iOS 6.1 to iOS 5.1.1, 5.1, 5.0.1 on iPhone 4, 3GS & iPod Touch 4G | Jailbreak Squad

You will also need the 5.1 or 5.1.1 Ipsw firmware file depending on what you want to update to
You can download these here : iClarified - iPhone - Where To Download iPhone Firmware Files From

Just follow the above tutorial with the correct Ipsw file and you will beable to update to 5.x

You will need to jailbrake it again if you want it jailbroke

Backup the phone with iTunes before updating

Thanks Kryton, I will take a look tomorrow. Your help is much appreciated.

just make sure that the version of skygo you are using supports the ios you intend to use , i take it its the older version skygo u are using to keep the jailbreak and skygo working

Thanks Biffo1, that is a very good point, so it will depend whether or not I already have an older skygo saved. If I download new, it won't work anyway? I thought I had seen a thread recently which suggested if your iPhone was jb you could use airplay or something to stream via Apple TV 2nd gen. Or is that just XMBC you can stream to Apple TV with if you have jb phone?

You may be able to pick up, by reading between the lines, I don't know what the heck I'm talking about really!
lol

Thanks Biffo1, so I need to extract this and then transfer to iphone and then, once I get apple tv 2, I will be able to stream to the TV?

It is only the apple tv 2nd gen this will work with isnt it or could I stream using a different system?

I've been looking at the Apple TV 2nd gen and am I right in thinking it only plays as 720 HD? my TV is 1080 HD, would it work on there? Am I being a numpty again? lol

it will work mate as mine is a full hd 3d tv, yea with the apple tv 3 theres no jailbreak but its full hd 1080p

@ Kryton I get as far as the selecting IPSW File and then redsnow starts doing something and then comes back with the message iPhone found in recovery mode rather than DFU mode yet on the screen it shows I am in DFU MODE. Any idea what I'm doing wrong, it's getting a right pain in the arse now since half my apps are refusing to run any more!

sorry mate now ive looked at this post you have another option i ve just downgraded an iphone 3gs from 6.1.3 to 5.1.1, so this should work for u if u have defo saved your shsh blobs for 5.1.1 i [upgrade or downgrade if you have your blobs saved]would do that fw as its the most stable
First 1.use ifaith - Connect your device and open ifath [remember if your on vista, win 7 or win 8, you right click the .exe file /properties/compatability tab/tick the option to run windows xp service pack 3 mode]
then choose the option ive circled
ifaith.PNG,
then this screen will appear
Capture.PNG
once your device shows up on the right select it , or you might get a prompt box saying see available blobs for your device , once you follow the on screen instructions you will have saved your shsh blobs , once these are saved you have to download the 5.1.1 ipsw file from HERE.
Then you need sn0wbreeze [attached in the post], the idea now is to create a custom ipsw using you saved blobs stitched into the original 5.1.1 ipsw open sn0wbreeze up and follow the on screen instructions, if your blobs are wrong or the ipsw it will let you know, if you do this correct you will have a custom ipsw file that can be restored in itunes.

This will only work if you defo have your blobs saved for 5.1.1 or other fw yo want, if you need any help mate just ask

anytime mate , honest i tried a few options with the 3gs last night ,

iPhone found in recovery mode rather than DFU mode yet on the screen it shows I am in DFU MODE. Any idea what I'm doing wrong

On what screen does it show your in DFU mode mate? The phone ?
If the phone is showing a USB connect to iTunes logo then its in recovery mode.
The screen should be black like its not turned on if its in DFU mode.

On the computer screen like your screenshot showed. My iPhone screen was black.

@biffo1 I have tried the snow breeze method you suggested but when I get to iTunes and press shift and restore it picks up the IPSW file but then I get an error message: The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3194)
Any ideas how I can get around this please?

Thanks
