OK,

I'm looking for a new router, I need some thing with a little but more zest in it, A bit more Flash Ram and a better faster processor. (for a VPN)

So I was just about to buy the following:

ASUS-RT-N16

and then noticed reading between the lines.

The ASUS RT-N16 is in the 100Mbps+ Routing class, meaning it can route at higher speeds than a 100Mbps WAN connection can handle, but it does not even attempt to approach GigaBit WAN performance. Performance details below.

Test Description

Throughput - (Mbps)
WAN - LAN 141.1
LAN - WAN 143.3
Total Simultaneous 155.9
Max. Connections 200
Firmware Version 1.0.0.6

ASUS RT-N66U

is a Dual Band N-Router (2.4GHz and 5GHz bands)

with lots of RAM (256Mb) and FlashRAM (32Mb), so it is well equipped to run DD-WRT/Tomato

The ASUS RT-N66U is in the GigaBit Routing class, meaning it can route at higher speeds than a 100Mbps WAN connection can handle. Performance details below.

Test Description

RT-N66U
WAN - LAN 732 Mbps
LAN - WAN 729 Mbps
Total Simultaneous 810 Mbps
Maximum Simultaneous Connections 34,925
Firmware Version 3.1.0.3.90 (stock firmware number)

Each port is 1Gb/s. It has 250MB RAM & 32MB flash as well as 2 USB 2.0 ports & an internal SD card reader / writer.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Now I've been sitting behind a NETGEAR WNR3500. I need to get rid of the WNR3500 as it only has 8 meg of flash and 64MB ram which is no good for encryption/tunnel/vpn etc. That's why I was looking for something a bit faster, there's a price difference though of about £50.00 between them two new ones. make sense to go for the RTN66U ?

What ya think?

Hiya, i bought the asus rt n66 u router couple of months ago and so far cant fault, i had the netgear wndr 3700 before that which i kept for around 2 weeks, was crap imo, wireless signal kept dropping all the time, speeds were really bad, asus one is alot better, i havent tried any of the custom firmwares for it yet but ive read the tomato one is better, i cant see you been disappointed with the asus mate,

Just be aware that the Asus RT N66u has been replaced with a newer model :)

ah man I'll swap you for a netgear if your not using it :)

Yeah that'll be right mate, no matter what is "cutting edge" at the time is "outdated" after you've bought it.

I'm a right one, Just can't seem to get what I want.

Finding it hard for a "VPN Host" that will do what I want, I'll write a review on them all when I've finished.

I've been playing with a few over the past week.

  • If I want a "static IP address" then you have to add that as an extra. (Not that it's important)
  • If you want a "port open" then there's not many that do that, they are but they give you a port. (running jtag server)
  • Torrent servers are pretty much NL based. (which doesn't matter really)
  • You need a kick ass router to decypher the encryption if setting up Tomato/DD-WRT as it's a CPU heavy work load
  • Some of them you need to buy a "home" extra if you wan't more than 5 devices connected behind i

I'll keep an eye out and let you all know how I get on with the bits and pieces.

Of course you can run "their" software for connecting via VPN on your main rig but that defeats the whole purpose for me as I'm after everything running behind it.

I think I'll maybe start with an RTN16 and see how I get on with that.... ;)

I have this one, its a cable/DSL router - hctp://www.netgear.co.uk/home/products/wirelessrouters/high-performance/dgnd3700.aspx#two

Re: Looking for a new Router ..Asus RTN-16 and TRn66 LAN/WAN Speeds

  • owerful Dual Core (400 MHz each) processor
  • High speed access to external USB storage using 2 USB 2.0 ports
  • Memory: 128 MB Flash and 128 MB RAM

Nice....lots of flash and lots of ram.

Did you spot the type in the bottom picture? :)

You would not want them in your hair ;)

Re: Looking for a new Router ..Asus RTN-16 and TRn66 LAN/WAN Speeds

LOL!

I would have sworn that it was a new technology if it had not have been posted else where, thought it was a new 10/100/1000/10000/1000000/1000000000 speed ;)

Re: Looking for a new Router ..Asus RTN-16 and TRn66 LAN/WAN Speeds

Going to grab me self the N66, this for those that would like to know was posted.

Thanks to "Lefty" for this @ Linksysinfo :)

nvram60k means its for routers with 60k of nvram, most standard units only have 32k of nvram, alot of the newer N units have either 60 or 64k of nvram. makes for more room to store settings etc. The RT-N16 has only 32k of nvram.

Well nvram has nothing to do with board ram or flash rom. Its programmed into the CFE bootloader (like a BIOS for the router). Its basically where all the router firmware settings are stored and how they get initiated on boot. The expanded 60k and 64k nvram units leave more room for static settings, and on some units, its very needed, take for instance the WRT610N v2, great router hardware wise, but horrible nvram wise because it only has 32k nvram, so if you flash say dd-wrt (not sure how it does on tomato), out of that 32k you'll have around 4k free, not much room for port forwards, static DHCP, VPN certs, SSH certs etc etc, not much of a problem if you run a very simple setup, but for most people, its not enough anymore. Good thing on that unit that you can convert it to an E3000, which expands its nvram to 60k, and then makes it a glorious unit. With the RT-N16 its not as bad because its a single radio unit, i ran one for a long time as my main gateway/AP, did a great job, but because i expanded my network to my neighbors around me and have alot more static settings, i needed units that have more nvram, so now i don't purchase anything that has lower than 60k nvram. Most newer units coming out now have either 64k or 60k nvram, so they are not to hard to find.

And in a nutshell, dual radio units need as much nvram as possible, because of 2 radios, it uses alot more NVRAM variables right off the top for that second radio. Even if you have it disabled, it still uses up the variables, thus eating precious nvram space. Once you get to around 200bytes the router becomes highly unstable and can even loose your total config setup. So the more, the better.

--------------------------------

ASUS RT-N66U - 900Mbps Dual Band Wireless N Router, Gigabit LAN/WAN, 2x USB, Print FTP UPnP VPN Server, IPv6, 8x SSID, Wireless 3D HD content streaming, 3 Year Warranty ;) not that the warranty is going to be any good as the puppy will be getting burst open and flashed like before it's had time to even boot.....

Go for ASUS RT-N66U , this one get great reviews because of the great performance. It's better for the price

Re: Looking for a new Router ..Asus RTN-16 and TRn66 LAN/WAN Speeds

yeah thanks mate, got it and it wasn't out the box less than 30 seconds and had it flashed. :)

Good thing about it is the processor, must say it now does fly along using a VPN and openVPN on the router it's self.

As for the 5GHz, then not that impressed with it, yeah I have a few reinforced walls and the like but the whole new 5GHz was "sold" to me as the next in cutting edge technology and penetration would be sublime.

I have started a new project as you can install DD-WRT on to an old PC and of course the memory and the processor will beat just about any router that is out there on the market, the "home user" router anyway. good for encryption... :)

So just been messing with that then if I get DD-WRT installed on this old dell then that can then be my router, I know there's a lot of decryption and encrypting to decipher with the VPN and also what you get it what you pay for, for now, I'm happy with the VPN that I have installed on "Tomato" as mostly my server is downloading when I'm either not in or asleep or away from home.

it's horses for courses when you step into the VPN world as you need a nice and fast machine, (Router) or an old machine with dd-wrt installed in it for the encryption, and not to mention the ISP/VPN, I have pretty much tested them all over the last few months and have found two that seem to be the "dogs" as well, everything works on them, ok it took a little manual intervention to route a couple of devices out via my normal ISP and the rest out over the VPN but nothing to hard.

Been using VPN's for a while now....especially with work and routing my browsing via my home ISP when at work....

I will do a write up and the like on them all, back to the router, yeah the 5GHz sucks, nice and fast when connected and close.....pages are lightning fast......

Good job I have kept my repeater for the normal signal to be boosted or I'd be screwed next door.

Good router all and all once you get rid of the OFW that comes with it.

If I do ever buy another "router" it will be a "router board" and not a stand alone "purpose" built router from netgear etc.

Router board all the way or dd-wrt on an old pc ;)
